WE DID IT!

1st Place. Again!

11 countries 🌏
17 teams 👥
600+ students 🧑‍🎓

We are so proud to share that UNSW Bionic Heart has won first place 🥇 at the 2026 Heart Hackathon in Suzhou, China. 🏆

All our team members worked tirelessly over the past year and we are grateful that the organisers at Heart Hackathon and ISMCS gave us the opportunity to share our work.

This monumental achievement would not have been possible without the support of our academic leads Dr Audrey Adji and Prof. Bernard Kornfeld, and all of our academic and technical advisors.

We also want to thank our sponsors for their incredible support: NSW Government Chief Scientist & Engineer, The Baird Institute, UNSW Tyree IHealthE, and Abbott, as well as our collaborators: Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, St Vincent’s Hospital, Ansys, Leap, and AD Instruments.

We have learnt so much from this experience and are honoured that we had the opportunity to compete with, learn from, and share our knowledge with fellow student teams from all across the world.

We look forward to seeing you all again next year at Las Vegas! ✈️🫀

Another fantastic opportunity to showcase the work happening at UBH. 💛

Last week, our Project Lead and Biocompatibility Lead presented UBH’s project at UNSW’s Engineers Australia Accreditation Showcase event, highlighting our team’s progress and vision for the future of biomedical innovation.

Engaging with industry professionals and receiving valuable feedback is an important part of our journey, helping us refine our ideas and strengthen the impact of our work.

A huge congratulations to our presenters for representing UBH so professionally. We’re excited to continue building connections within the engineering community and sharing our progress along the way.

Throwing it back to March, when some of our Electrical & Mechanical Team members had the opportunity to present at Leap Tech Day! ⚡💛

It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the work happening at UBH, share our ideas with the wider engineering community, and connect with fellow students, researchers, and industry professionals. We’re also proud to be partnered with LEAP Australia and Ansys , who provide us with access to their simulation software and expert consultations, helping support the development of our work.

We’re incredibly proud of our team for representing UBH with professionalism and passion. Thank you to everyone who made the day such a memorable experience, we’re excited to keep building on this momentum.

Last week, the Mock Circulatory Loop team had the opportunity to visit the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute to gain insight into their design approach and the components used in developing their systems.

Our team learned about the challenges the researchers faced during development as well as the strategies used to address them, allowing us to incorporate these ideas into our own designs. The team also received valuable constructive feedback on our own designs, along with and potential solutions to overcome our own technical hurdles.

A huge thank you to the researchers for all their support.

Join us for an Intro to Ansys Workshop hosted by UNSW Bionic Heart, designed to give you a hands-on introduction to simulation tools widely used in engineering and medical device design.

This workshop will guide you through the fundamentals of electromagnetic and thermal simulations, with a focus on walking through the step-by-step process of performing electrostatic and thermal analyses on a simple model. Whether you’re new to Ansys or looking to strengthen your simulation skills, this session will provide practical insights into setting up, running, and interpreting simulation results.
You’ll gain exposure to real-world applications relevant to biomedical and engineering contexts, helping bridge the gap between theory and industry practice.

📅 Date: Friday, 17 April (Week 9)
⏰ Time: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
📍 Location: SEB G02 (Science & Engineering Building)

Spots are limited, so be sure to register early.

We are proud to announce that Mending Broken Hearts (MBH) is officially becoming the UNSW Bionic Heart (UBH).

This rebrand means more than a name change. It reflects the growth, dedication and ambition of a team that has continued to evolve in its mission to advance in cardiac technology. As we mature as an organisation, our identity should reflect the standard we hold ourselves to, rigorous, collaborative and purpose driven.

UBH represents a renewed commitment to innovation and excellence, as well as a future built on the strong foundation our team has worked hard to establish.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey so far.
