That bargain restraint could be dangerous.

A bargain seat or one that has been passed on may not be the bargain you thought.

This seat had a number of tell-tale signs that it may have been in an accident or had some other misadventure.

The damage and marks shown are all on the one seat, a safe n sound which had a 2007 DOM.

The White marks in the plastic are weaknesses caused either by an accident or some other misadventure, which has rendered it fit only for disposal.

If you are unsure, or thinking about using a pre-loved seat, I am happy to check it over for any visible damage.

However, seats involved in accidents don't always have visible damage, so if you are unsure of the history of the seat, it may be safer to give it a miss.

Does this happen when you use your seat?

So, you have installed your new seat, followed the instructions, got a nice firm, secure fit, the harness straps are at the right height .....
BUT..... Baby's head flops forward, sitting on her chest.
You might look at her and think 'that can't be comfortable', but did you know, that for newborn and young babies this is dangerous? This can also be a risk for special needs babies and children with low body tone.
For a baby, that position can cause breathing difficulties.
Try it yourself - put your chin on your chest and try breathing through your nose. Now put your head up and try again. Did you notice the difference? As an adult, we can feel that and move to make breathing easier. A baby with very little neck strength, cannot move to correct it.
SO... What can be done? The angle of the restraint needs to be adjusted, often by using towels or similar to raise the foot end of the seat, therefore reducing the angle of the recline for baby. The type of seats in your car impact of how the restraint sits.
When this is done, we need to manage the risk of the packing being ejected, often through the use of a locking clip, which secures the seatbelt holding the restraint in place so that it doesn't loosen, especially under the force of an impact.
This is just one factor that I consider when I install your restraint. I check the angle, to make sure that it is low enough that it shouldn't cause a problem.

Q: Why do professional child restraint techs recommend rear facing for as long as possible?
A: Because a baby's head is very big in relation to their body size when compared to an adult. (See diagram below)
Baby's bones are not fully developed or ossified, meaning they are not physically able to withstand the force of an accident.
Good neck strength is NOT an indication that baby is ready to forward face yet.
