Accountability is more than just saying sorry. It's acknowledging your words, actions and behaviours, and the impact they have on your partner. It's listening to your partner's experience without getting defensive, justifying, blame-shifting or bringing up past actions of theirs.
It's important to own mistakes, missteps and unintentional hurt, and to validate their feelings about it. Instead of saying "I was just joking, you're too sensitive", an accountable response is, "I can see how my comment made you feel disrespected, and I will be more mindful in the future."
And true accountability then requires following through on promises to do better. If a recurring issue is addressed, you actively work on a change or course correction. That's how you build trust and safety between you.
