Today, some of our team attended What’s the Buzz? training with Mark and Noni Le Messurier.

Their teaching was practical, engaging and deeply valuable, with a strong focus on helping people build emotional regulation, confidence, friendships, and connection.

At Disability SA, we are proud to invest in our therapists so this learning can be brought directly into meaningful, neuroaffirming support for our participants and families.

This week, we proudly recognise and celebrate the incredible contribution of our volunteers at Disability SA. Our volunteers help create welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environments for our participants and families we work alongside each day. Whether supporting programs, encouraging participation, building connection, or simply showing kindness and consistency, the impact they make is meaningful and deeply valued.

We also want to acknowledge and thank the many amazing students completing placements with us throughout the year. Our students bring enthusiasm, compassion, fresh ideas, and a genuine passion for supporting others. We are proud to support the next generation of Therapists in the disability sector and value the contribution they make to our organisation and community.

Thank you to all our volunteers and students for the important role you play in helping create safer, more inclusive, and connected communities.

The Behaviour Iceberg is a really important approach we use at Disability SA. 🧊

It reminds us that what we see on the surface is only a small part of the story. Behaviour is just the “tip of the iceberg” things like withdrawing, refusing tasks, or becoming overwhelmed are only the visible signs.

Underneath the surface is where we look for understanding. This might include anxiety, sensory overload, frustration, communication challenges, past experiences, or feeling overwhelmed.

By focusing on what’s underneath the behaviour, we can better understand what someone may be communicating and how we can support them more effectively.

At Disability SA, this approach helps us move away from simply responding to behaviour, and towards understanding the reasons behind it. 💙

Strengths-based language is important because it shifts focus from deficits to abilities, helping create more inclusive workplaces where neurodivergent people are understood, valued, and supported to thrive.

On 8th May 2026, Do It For Dolly Day encouraged people across Australia to “Go Blue” to help end bullying. This important initiative brings together schools, workplaces, sporting clubs, and communities, with Australians in raising awareness and supporting a kinder, more inclusive society.

At Disability SA, we are proud to support this meaningful day. All staff members across our workplace will be wearing a touch of blue to show solidarity and raise awareness. While blue is already reflected in our brand, we will be making a conscious effort to highlight it in our attire as a visible sign of our commitment to this important cause.

We were delighted to welcome our new 4th-year Occupational Therapy students, Sophie and Liv, this week for their placement!

It’s a pleasure to have students from Adelaide University join our team as they begin working on their P*P community project, focusing on "Trauma Connections and Social and Emotional Development." This is such an important area of practice, and we’re excited to see the impact of their work within the community.

Yesterday marked the launch of our wellness program, beginning with the first session led by Jade, our nutritionist.

The class focused on practical, sustainable approaches to nutrition, with an emphasis on building healthy habits that can be maintained long term.

Jade created an engaging and supportive environment, encouraging thoughtful discussion and reflection throughout.

It was a strong and positive start to the program, setting a solid foundation for the sessions ahead.

It was wonderful to be invited to the launch of Australia’s first university diploma for people with intellectual disability at Flinders University.

A milestone for inclusive education and meaningful employment pathways, driven by the inaugural students stepping into this opportunity. Well done to each of you, we look forward to seeing the opportunities this diploma creates.
