๐ŸŒˆ Meet our QLD Based Neurodiversity-affirming Behaviour Practitioner ๐ŸŒˆ

Hi everyone! Iโ€™m Amelia (I also go by Millie) โ˜€๏ธ

Iโ€™m a Specialist Behaviour Practitioner in South-East QLD, and someone who genuinely loves the magical chaos of working with neurodivergent humans. ๐Ÿคฉ

Iโ€™m proudly AuDHD (Autistic + ADHD), which means I donโ€™t just understand neurodivergence professionally, but I've lived it every day of my life. As a single mum to an awesome AuDHD 4-year-old, my world is equal parts sensory-friendly strategies, dopamine negotiations, and helping my little person navigate a world that often struggles to understand how his wonderfully unique brain works. ๐Ÿง โœจ

I bring both clinical knowledge and lived experience into my work, practicing exclusively through a neurodiversity-affirming framework, with a strong focus on neuroscience-based support and Dr Ross Greene's principle, "Kids do well when they can".

I often explain the way I work with clients to be similar to an investigator and interpreter. I use neuroscience-based strategies to identify what my clients need to feel safe and regulated, and what unmet needs exist that lead to dysregulation (a.k.a. โ€œbehaviours of concernโ€). I use this knowledge to inform the evidence-based strategies I develop, with the goal of needs being reliably met, subsequently preventing dysregulation. ๐ŸŽ‰

Outside of work, youโ€™ll usually find me chasing a bit of adrenaline (skydiving and bungee jumping are favourites at the moment), caring for my ever-growing collection of plants, or figuring out how to make life work WITH my brain instead of against it.

Fun fact: I have a condition called RCPDโ€ฆ which means I canโ€™t burp. Ever. Not even once. Itโ€™s as inconvenient as it sounds โ€” but a great conversation starter. ๐Ÿคญ

It's great to see three of our young participants getting involved with a local footy club and having a blast!

Here are a few shots of Rowie, Ron, and Alex getting into the action during their weekend game playing for Broadview Football Club, competing in the SANFL Disability Programs weekly APM SANFL Inclusive League.

The results might not have gone their way, but the guys had a great time out and it's fantastic to see community initiatives opening up popular sports to give everyone a go!

Cheers to the Broadview footy club, as well as all the other clubs who make this league possible.

A special shout-out to the local footy supporters too, for not only sticking around through the pouring rain to show support but also providing a great supportive atmosphere.

We want to take a moment to share an important update about the direction of Total Support Services.

As we continue listening to and learning from the Autistic and broader neurodivergent community, we recognise that truly supportive services must be neurodiversity-affirming. This means moving beyond traditional models and working towards support that is respectful of neurodiversity and guided by the lived experiences of neurodivergent people themselves.

At Total Support Services, this is not a one-off conversation โ€” it is a long-term commitment.

We are actively investing in continued education across our organisation, with the goal of ensuring our team can provide support that aligns with what the neurodivergent community advocates for:
โœ”๏ธ Acceptance over โ€œfixingโ€
โœ”๏ธ Respect for autonomy and identity
โœ”๏ธ Support that adapts to the individual, not the other way around

As part of this commitment, one of our own AuDHD (Autistic + ADHD) practitioners is currently developing training to be delivered across our company. This training is grounded in lived experience and will play a key role in shaping how we support participants moving forward.

We know that building trust takes time, consistency, and accountability. We are committed to doing the work.

This is just one step in our ongoing journey to becoming a neurodivergent-affirming provider.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Keep an eye on this space for more updates on our learning journey, as well as new and evolving services designed to better support neurodivergent participants.

Thank you to the neurodivergent community for your continued advocacy, leadership, and willingness to share your knowledge. We are listening, and we are committed to change.

This yearโ€™s theme, โ€œBeyond the Headlines,โ€ highlights the often-unseen realities of schizophrenia, including the positive progress helping people live more confidently and comfortably.

One great example of this is how innovations like assistive technology and psychiatric service dogs are making a difference. Specially trained dogs can help distinguish real interactions, recognise patterns, and interrupt or redirect during hallucinations.

Normalising Schizophrenia and supporting people who live with it helps create a more supportive environment, putting an emphasis on working together and making everyoneโ€™s lives better.

Yesterday we hosted the Biggest Morning Tea at our Head Office in Adelaide!

It was an awesome day in support of a great cause, and so far we have successfully raised $179 to help Cancer Council support Australians with vital research, prevention programs, support and advocacy!

Every little bit helps, and you can help make a big difference by giving just a couple of dollars. In fact, today is International Tea Day, and the awesome team at Dilmah Tea are matching donations (up to a total of $50,000) โ€“ so today you can get on board and make your donation count twice as much!

If you would like to help out with supporting this great cause, you can do so via the following link to our Biggest Morning Tea page:
