🎨 SOMETIMES IT'S OKAY TO MAKE A MESS!
Have you ever stopped yourself from trying something creative because you were worried about making a mess?
Perhaps you didn't want to waste materials, get paint on your hands or create something that looked terrible.
We're often taught to keep things tidy, follow instructions and get things right.
But what happens when we give ourselves permission to do the opposite?
💛 In creative counselling, the mess can be part of the process.
Sometimes it's about getting our hands into clay, experimenting with colours or allowing materials to behave in unexpected ways.
And sometimes that experience can bring up interesting feelings.
🌿 Do I feel uncomfortable when things aren't neat?
🎨 Can I experiment without knowing what I'm making?
🌈 What happens when I stop trying to control the outcome?
💗 Can I enjoy something without needing it to look beautiful?
For some people, working with messy materials can feel freeing and playful.
For others, it might feel uncomfortable or overwhelming.
Both responses are worth respecting.
At AngelArts Studio, there is no expectation to get messy. We can explore creativity in ways that feel comfortable, accessible and meaningful to each person.
Because creative counselling isn't about making a mess for the sake of it.
It's about having opportunities to explore, experiment, notice our responses and perhaps discover something new about ourselves.
✨ Sometimes the most meaningful part of creating is allowing ourselves to do something differently.
And sometimes, a little paint on our fingers is simply good fun! 💛
💬 Are you someone who loves getting messy with art materials, or do you prefer keeping everything neat and organised?

🎨 WHAT IF I DON’T FINISH MY ARTWORK?

Have you ever started something creative and felt disappointed because you didn’t finish it?

Perhaps you ran out of time, lost interest or simply didn’t know what to do next.

We often place so much importance on the finished product that we forget to appreciate what happens along the way.

💛 In creative counselling, unfinished doesn’t mean unsuccessful.

Sometimes the most meaningful moments happen halfway through creating.

🌿 Perhaps you discovered something about yourself.

🎨 Perhaps you tried something outside your comfort zone.

🌈 Perhaps you noticed frustration, excitement or uncertainty.

💗 Or perhaps you simply enjoyed having time to explore without expectations.

At AngelArts Studio, the creative process is just as valuable as the finished artwork.

There is no requirement to complete something beautiful, meaningful or even recognisable.

And sometimes, leaving something unfinished is a choice worth respecting.

Because your progress isn’t measured by how much artwork you produce.

It’s about the experience, the exploration and what feels meaningful to you.

✨ You can pause.

✨ You can change direction.

✨ You can leave something unfinished.

✨ You can return to it another day.

You are allowed to enjoy the process without needing a finished product to prove its value. 💛

💬 Are you someone who needs to finish every creative project, or do you have a collection of half-finished creations waiting for you? 😊

🌿 WHEN WORDS AREN’T ENOUGH

Have you ever struggled to explain how you’re feeling?

Sometimes we know something is bothering us, but finding the right words feels impossible.

We might say “I’m fine” because we don’t know where to begin.

Or perhaps we understand what we’re experiencing but aren’t ready to talk about it.

This is one of the reasons I love working creatively. 💛

In creative counselling, expression doesn’t always begin with conversation.

Sometimes it begins with choosing a colour.

Tearing paper.

Working with clay.

Making marks on a page.

Or simply exploring different materials.

🎨 The creative process offers another way to explore our experiences.

For some people, particularly those who find verbal communication challenging, having something to do with their hands can make the counselling environment feel more comfortable.

And sometimes, as we create, thoughts and feelings begin to emerge.

Other times, the experience is simply about being present, experimenting and enjoying the process.

Both are valuable.

🌈 There doesn’t always need to be a story behind the artwork.

Not every colour represents an emotion.

Not every image needs interpreting.

And not everything we create needs explaining.

What matters is having the freedom to explore in a way that feels comfortable and meaningful to you.

Because sometimes, our hands can help us begin exploring what our words haven’t quite found yet. 💕

💬 Do you find it easier to talk about things when your hands are busy doing something creative?

📖🔥 BOILED BOOKS — THE BEAUTY OF LETTING GO, ATTACHMENT & TRANSFORMATION 🎨💛

Could you deliberately destroy a perfectly good book? 📖😳

Not just any book… but one that someone has spent months, perhaps years, writing.

A book filled with someone’s imagination, knowledge, thoughts and stories.

For many of us, books are precious.

We grow up being taught to look after them, respect them and never damage their pages.

So imagine being invited to take a book, fill it with papers, colours, images and textures, bind it together… and then BOIL IT! 😳😂

During our creative arts therapy retreat, we explored the fascinating process of Boiled Books.

And while the creative possibilities were exciting, the process also invited us to consider something much deeper.

💛 What does it mean to deliberately alter or potentially destroy something that already has value?

A book isn’t simply paper held together by a cover.

Someone has written those words.

Someone has invested their time, creativity and perhaps a little piece of themselves into its pages.

And sometimes books hold sentimental value for us too.

They remind us of childhood, someone we love, a particular time in our lives or a story that has stayed with us.

The thought of changing or destroying a book can bring up unexpected feelings.

“But it’s a perfectly good book!”

“Someone worked so hard to write this.”

“It feels wrong to damage it.”

“What if I ruin something that can never be replaced?”

And suddenly, what appears to be a playful creative activity becomes an opportunity to explore our values, attachments and beliefs.

🌿 Why do we hold on to certain things?

🌿 What makes something precious or valuable?

🌿 Can something lose its original purpose but gain a different kind of meaning?

🌿 Is transformation the same as destruction?

🌿 Can we honour something while also allowing it to change?

And then there’s the creative process itself…

As the book is exposed to heat and water, colours bleed, papers wrinkle, textures transfer and pages begin to transform.

We can choose the materials and prepare the book, but we cannot completely control the outcome.

🎨 This is where the therapeutic possibilities become particularly interesting.

Boiled Books can invite us to explore:

💛 Attachment and letting go — noticing what it feels like to change something we value.

🌈 Control and uncertainty — allowing the process to unfold without knowing what the final result will be.

🌱 Loss and transformation — considering how something familiar can change while still holding meaning.

🦋 Perfectionism and acceptance — learning to appreciate wrinkles, stains, imperfections and unexpected outcomes.

✨ Respect and personal values — reflecting on what we believe should be preserved, protected or allowed to evolve.

And perhaps the most important part isn’t the finished book at all.

It’s noticing what happens within us throughout the experience.

Do we feel guilty?

Excited?

Uncomfortable?

Curious?

Do we hesitate before beginning?

Do we want to rescue the book from the process?

Or do we discover a sense of freedom in allowing something familiar to become something entirely different?

There is no right or wrong response.

And choosing not to alter a book can be just as meaningful as choosing to transform one.

That’s something I love about creative arts therapy.

Sometimes the materials and the decisions we make while working with them reveal opportunities for reflection that we might never have anticipated.

📖 Perhaps a Boiled Book isn’t simply about destroying an old story.

Perhaps it’s about exploring what happens when we give something a new chapter. 💛

And perhaps, just like in life, transformation doesn’t always mean that what came before has lost its value.

💬 I’d love to know… Could you bring yourself to boil a perfectly good book, or would the thought of destroying someone’s written words be too difficult? 📖🔥

🎨 YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAVE IT ALL TOGETHER TO BEGIN 💛

Sometimes the hardest part of asking for support isn’t knowing that you need it.

It’s believing that you have to know what to say, how to explain your feelings, or even where to begin.

“I don’t know what’s wrong.”

“I can’t explain how I’m feeling.”

“I don’t know what to talk about.”

“What if I just sit there and say nothing?”

And that’s okay. 💕

One of the things I love about creative counselling is that we don’t always need words to begin exploring what’s happening inside.

Sometimes we start with a colour.

A scribble.

A piece of clay.

A collage made from images that simply catch our attention.

Or perhaps we just sit together and create.

There doesn’t have to be a plan, a finished product or a meaningful explanation.

🌿 The creative process can give us somewhere gentle to begin.

For children, teenagers, neurodivergent individuals and adults who find talking about their emotions difficult, having something creative to engage with can sometimes make the experience feel less confronting.

And sometimes, while our hands are busy, conversations begin to unfold naturally.

Other times, they don’t.

And that’s okay too.

Because creative counselling isn’t about producing beautiful artwork or finding the perfect words.

It’s about creating a space where you feel safe enough to explore, express yourself and simply be.

✨ You don’t need to know what to say.

✨ You don’t need to know how to draw.

✨ You don’t need to have everything figured out.

You can simply begin where you are. 💛

At AngelArts Studio, I believe creativity can open doors to connection, self-discovery and emotional wellbeing.

💬 Have you ever found it easier to talk while doing something creative with your hands?

🎨 “BUT WHAT IF I RUIN SOMEONE ELSE’S PAINTING?”

During our Art Speed Dating activity, there was another part of the experience that really stood out to me.

For someone who struggles with feeling “not good enough”, the hardest part might not be handing your own artwork to someone else.

It might be having someone else’s artwork placed in front of you and being asked to contribute to it.

Suddenly that little voice can appear…

“But I can’t paint.”
“What if I wreck it?”
“I don’t know what to add.”
“Everyone else is more creative than me.”
“What if what I do isn’t good enough?”

Those thoughts aren’t really just about painting.

Sometimes that same fear can show up in other parts of our lives — holding back because we’re worried we’ll get it wrong, believing other people can do it better, or feeling that what we have to offer isn’t valuable enough.

That’s what made this creative process so interesting.

Nobody needed to be a “good” painter.

You could add a colour.
A line.
A shape.
Some dots.
A pattern.
One small brushstroke.

And then pass the canvas on.

🎨 You didn’t have to create the whole picture to contribute something worthwhile to it.

By the time each canvas travelled around the group and returned to its original artist, it contained a little contribution from everyone.

Different abilities. Different ideas. Different styles.

And somehow, they all belonged.

Perhaps that’s the bigger message:

You don’t have to be the best at something to have something worth contributing.

Sometimes building confidence begins with making one small mark despite the voice telling you that you can’t. 💛

🎨 ART SPEED DATING — TRUSTING THE CREATIVE PROCESS 💕

What happens when you start a painting… and then hand it over to someone else? 😳🎨

At our creative retreat, we tried Art Speed Dating — a fun collaborative painting experience that turned out to be about so much more than making art.

🌿 We each started with our own canvas, creating something nature-inspired in the centre.

Then the timer started! ⏰

After a short period of painting, we passed our canvas to the person on our right. They added something of their own — without changing or painting over the original image in the centre.

Then we passed again…and again…and again.

Every person added their own colours, marks, patterns and ideas until eventually our canvas travelled all the way around the table and came home to us.

And what came back was no longer simply my artwork.

It had become our artwork. ❤️

What I loved most about this process was the therapeutic experience quietly happening underneath all the laughter and paint and maybe a little bit of anxiety to start with.

We were practising letting go of control, tolerating uncertainty, respecting boundaries, trusting other people, being flexible and allowing something to evolve without knowing what the final result would be.

For someone who struggles with perfectionism or worries about getting things “right”, handing over your artwork can feel surprisingly uncomfortable.

But that’s exactly where the magic can happen. ✨

Creative processes like this give us a safe and playful way to experience:

🌈 I don’t have to control everything.
🌿 Someone else’s contribution doesn’t diminish mine.
💗 My original idea can remain while still making room for others.
🎨 Different doesn’t mean wrong.
✨ I can trust the process without knowing the outcome.

And when our paintings finally returned to us, each one carried a little piece of everyone who had been sitting around that table.

Connection made visible through art. 💕

That’s one of the things I love most about creative wellbeing work — sometimes we’re exploring something quite meaningful without even realising it at the time.

How would you feel watching your canvas disappear around the table — excited, curious…or slightly terrified? 😂

🎨 “But I’m Not Creative…”

This is something I hear more often than you might think.

“I can’t draw.”
“I’m terrible at art.”
“I wouldn’t know what to make.”

And my answer is always the same:

You don’t need to be artistic to take part in creative counselling.

We’re not creating artwork for an exhibition.

There are no marks.
No comparison.
No expectation that it needs to look like anything in particular.

You might scribble with a marker, squish clay between your fingers, tear paper for a collage, choose colours, make patterns or simply explore a material because you like how it feels.

Sometimes we create while we talk.

Sometimes the creative process helps us find something we didn’t quite have words for.

And sometimes we simply enjoy making something.

The interesting part isn’t whether your artwork is “good”.

It’s what you notice, feel, discover or experience while you’re making it.

So if you’ve ever thought creative counselling couldn’t be for you because you “can’t do art”…

You absolutely can. 💛

No artistic ability required. Just permission to explore.

🎨 You Don’t Have to Finish It

We’re often taught that once we start something, we should finish it.

Finish the painting.
Complete the collage.
Make the clay piece look like something.
Turn the page into something “good.”

But in creative counselling, finishing the artwork isn’t always the goal.

Sometimes someone spends an entire session mixing colours.

Sometimes they make something and pull it apart.

Sometimes they cover over what they’ve created, change direction halfway through, or decide they’re simply done.

And sometimes the artwork goes home unfinished.

None of those things mean the session was unsuccessful.

Because while our hands are creating, we might also be practising:

✨ making choices without worrying about the “right” one
✨ noticing when frustration appears
✨ changing our mind without seeing it as failure
✨ experimenting without knowing the outcome
✨ recognising when we’ve had enough
✨ allowing something to remain unfinished

The value can be in what happens during the making, rather than what is sitting on the table at the end.

At AngelArts Studio, you don’t have to produce a beautiful finished piece to have had a meaningful creative experience.

Sometimes an unfinished piece of art has already done everything it needed to do. 💛
