Research excellence in action 👏

Three Flinders University researchers have secured almost $4 million in highly competitive National Health and Medical Research Council - NHMRC Investigator Grants, recognising the quality, impact and leadership of their research programs.

The funding will support three innovative projects addressing some of Australia’s most pressing health challenges:
- Improving trauma care and reducing injury inequities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
- Enhancing equitable access to aged care for older Australians
- Developing next-generation biomaterials to help prevent infections linked to medical implants.

This outstanding funding success highlights Flinders’ growing research excellence, with projects delivering real-world benefits for patients, communities and health systems while advancing health equity and innovation.

The secret to ageing well? It starts with prevention

A new national framework developed by researchers from SAHMRI’s Registry of Senior Australians (ROSA) Research Centre and Flinders University is set to strengthen how the quality and safety of care for older Australians is measured across the health and aged care system.

Launched by the Australian Consortium for Aged Care, the framework promotes a more coordinated, person-centred approach to care, recognising that older people often navigate multiple services and providers throughout their care journey.

By focusing on what matters most to older Australians—including autonomy, wellbeing, quality of life and access to care—the framework provides an evidence-based foundation to support continuous improvement across the sector.

New ROSA research has shed light on the experiences of older LGBT+ Australians accessing aged care.

Although many LGBT+ older adults in Australia do not report experiences of discrimination or homophobia in aged care settings, their experiences are diverse and may include more subtle or systemic challenges.
