"It seems like the journey is never going to be over. But I can say - I just completed my 12th and final round of chemotherapy. And it does get better."

At 30, Francesca Klemich was diagnosed with a grade three astrocytoma. Surgery, brain cancer, extreme fatigue, memory loss, endless appointments - and yet, here she is.

Through surgeon Dr Nick Vrodos and the NRF support group, Francesca found the people and the hope she needed to keep going. And now she wants you to know: you will get through it too.

The NRF isn't just changing outcomes for people battling brain cancer today - they're working for every person to have the opportunity to live a long, beautiful life that they deserve. 💛

May is Grey May - Brain Cancer Awareness Month. If Francesca's story moved you, the most meaningful thing you can do is help the NRF keep going. Every dollar funds the researchers working tirelessly behind the scenes so that more people get their shot at a long, beautiful life.

Thanks to incredible community fundraising of Cat and Matt Thornett in memory of Cat's dad Olly, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2024, brain tumour researchers at the Centre for Cancer Biology now have access to a new Thermo Fisher Scientific NanoDrop™ Ultra.

This small but powerful device helps scientists measure DNA and other molecules using just a tiny drop of sample. In seconds it shows whether a sample is suitable for research — helping to prevent failed experiments and protect precious tumour samples.

In brain tumour research, patient samples are often extremely limited and incredibly valuable. Technology like this allows researchers to work more efficiently and helps accelerate the discoveries that lead to better treatments.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Thornett family and to Thermo Fisher Scientific for helping make this possible and for supporting life-changing brain tumour research in South Australia.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an inspiring evening last night at the NRF Grey May Cocktail Party.

As Brain Tumour Awareness Month draws to a close, the evening was an opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary progress your support is helping drive across brain tumour research, clinical trials and collaborations here in South Australia and beyond.

Thank you to our panel speakers Dr Lisa Ebert, A/Prof Hien Le and Amanda Luck who shared some of the exciting new research happening right here in Adelaide — from advancing CAR-T immunotherapy and optimising radiation therapy, to personalised paediatric cancer vaccines, national data collaborations and innovative new clinical trials bringing renewed hope to patients and families facing some of the most aggressive brain tumours.

Importantly, the evening also highlighted how Adelaide continues to grow as a national hub for neuro-oncology research and collaboration, with major meetings including COGNO, NSA and ABCARA coming to Adelaide in 2026.

Thanks to your support, the NeuroSurgical Research Foundation funded a record $2.19 million into South Australian research projects and initiatives this year alone — helping drive discovery from bold new ideas through to clinical trials and better treatment options for patients.

To every supporter, sponsor, researcher, clinician, volunteer, ambassador and family member who helped make Grey May possible — thank you. Your support is helping drive research that is changing lives.

We are on track for another record-breaking year so watch this space!
