Your due date comes and goes - and your baby hasn't read the memo. So what now?
First, a deep breath. A due date is an estimate, not an expiry date. Only around 5% of babies actually arrive on their due date, and going a few days over is completely normal.
Here's what you actually need to know ⬇️⬇️
What ‘overdue’ actually means: A pregnancy is considered full term from 37 weeks. Most guidelines consider a baby 'post-term' at 42 weeks. The window between 40 and 42 weeks is known as 'late term' - and it's very common to be somewhere in there.
Should I worry at 41 weeks?
For most low-risk pregnancies, being at 41 weeks is not an emergency. Your Belong O&G team will be keeping a close eye on you and your baby through additional monitoring - things like checking your baby's movements, fluid levels, and heart rate. These checks help ensure everything is still tracking well.
First-time parents are statistically more likely to go past their due date as the cervix simply hasn't done this before. Second or subsequent pregnancies often move along a little faster. Your age, your baby's size, any pregnancy complications, and your overall health picture all factor into when your doctor may start conversations about next steps.
When might your doctor suggest intervening?
At 36 weeks your Belong doctor will start discussing your birth preferences, any risk factors and what the last weeks of pregnancy may look like. If everything is going smoothly but your little one hasn't made an appearance, at around 40 weeks, your doctor will have a conversation with you about the options. This isn't about panic, it's about balancing the benefits of waiting against the small but real increase in certain risks that come with going beyond 42 weeks. Every recommendation will be based on your individual circumstances, not a one-size-fits-all rule.
The most important thing? Stay in close contact with your Belong O&G team, keep tracking your baby's movements, and know that going overdue doesn't mean something is wrong - it just means your baby might need a little more time 🫶🏽
