We often think gratitude comes naturally when life is going well.
But Brother David Steindl-Rast offers this beautiful reminder:
“It is not happiness that makes us grateful. It is gratefulness that makes us happy.”
And I think there is something really powerful in that.
So here’s a little practice for today:
Pause.
Take a slow breath.
Feel your feet on the ground.
Look around.
What is here right now that you might normally overlook?
The warmth of the sun.
A cool breeze.
The sound of birds.
A familiar voice.
Your breath arriving.
Don't just name it. Receive it.
Stay with that feeling for a few breaths.
Sometimes happiness isn't something we need to go looking for.
Sometimes we simply need to become quiet enough to notice what is already here.
This is something I’ll be inviting people to explore at my Spring Reset Retreat. A day to slow down, reconnect and rediscover the wonder, joy and beauty of being alive.
