As St Andrew’s Hospital approaches 90 years of caring for the South Australian community, we are pleased to see the appointment of our new Chief Executive Officer, Angela McCabe, featured by the Australian Private Hospitals Association.

The article explores Angela’s extensive healthcare leadership experience, her vision for the future of St Andrew’s and the opportunities ahead for one of Australia’s largest standalone independent private hospitals.

Since joining St Andrew’s in May, Angela has spent time connecting with clinicians, staff, volunteers and stakeholders across the hospital, gaining an understanding of the people, partnerships and culture that have shaped St Andrew’s over the past nine decades.

As we look towards the future, we remain committed to building on these strong foundations together, continuing to deliver high-quality patient care and supporting the community that has placed its trust in St Andrew’s for generations.

This Pride Month, we celebrate the diversity of the communities we serve and the people who make up our St Andrew’s Hospital community.

Pride Month is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate LGBTQIA+ people, reflect on the importance of inclusion and belonging, and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring everyone is treated with dignity, respect and compassion.

At St Andrew’s, we believe every person deserves to feel welcome, safe and supported, whether they are a patient, visitor, volunteer or staff member.

Throughout June, we join communities around Australia and around the world in recognising Pride Month and celebrating the richness that diversity brings to our workplaces, healthcare settings and communities.

Happy Pride Month from all of us at St Andrew’s Hospital.

There are many moving parts involved in delivering safe, high-quality care, with some of the most important work happening behind the scenes.

Our Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) plays a vital role in every patient journey, ensuring surgical instruments and medical equipment are meticulously cleaned, sterilised and prepared for use. Their work requires technical expertise, precision and an unwavering commitment to patient safety.

Working closely with teams across the hospital, the CSSD team helps ensure the right equipment is available when and where it’s needed, supporting the smooth delivery of care every day.

While patients may never meet the people behind this essential service, their contribution is felt throughout the hospital. Thank you to our CSSD team for the dedication and expertise they bring to St Andrew’s each and every day.

Starting your nursing career can be equal parts exciting, challenging and rewarding.

In this Day in the Life, Jess shares a glimpse into her role as a Graduate Nurse in Recovery and what makes it such a special place to learn and grow.

Working in Recovery means caring for patients during a pivotal moment in their hospital journey, helping them feel safe, comfortable and supported as they wake following surgery. It’s a role that combines clinical excellence with compassion, teamwork and strong patient connection.

For Jess, the Graduate Nurse Program at St Andrew’s Hospital has provided the opportunity to build confidence, develop specialist skills and learn from experienced clinicians in a supportive team environment.

Tomorrow is "What Matters to You?" Day, a global initiative that encourages healthcare professionals to look beyond a diagnosis and better understand what is important to the people in their care.

Today, our graduate nurses spent time speaking with patients throughout the hospital, sparking conversations about what matters most to them.

Their responses were recorded on colourful leaves, now displayed in reception to serve as a reminder of the people, moments and priorities that matter most to our patients.

For our graduate nurses, this annual day serves as a valuable opportunity to learn more about the patient experience and the importance of truly listening. While clinical care is a vital part of what we do, understanding what matters to a patient as an individual helps us deliver care that is compassionate, personalised and meaningful.

As we mark "What Matters to You?" Day tomorrow, we encourage everyone to pause and consider the question themselves. Whether you're a patient, healthcare worker, volunteer, family member or friend, what matters to you?

Thank you to our graduate nurses and to all the patients who generously shared what matters most to them.

This National Reconciliation Week, St Andrew’s Hospital reflects on the ongoing journey of reconciliation and our commitment to building stronger relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across our hospital community.

Guided by our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan, we continue to take meaningful steps towards deepening cultural understanding, creating culturally respectful spaces and listening to the voices, stories and knowledge shared within our community.

Throughout the hospital, Aboriginal artwork has become an important part of these spaces, inviting reflection, storytelling and connection for patients, visitors, staff and volunteers alike. We are grateful to the artists who so generously share their culture and creativity with the St Andrew’s community, and to the guidance and support of Kaurna Elder Uncle Tamaru and Glenelg Art Gallery Director Rowena Brown in helping strengthen understanding across the hospital.

This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, “All In”, reminds us that reconciliation is a shared responsibility. It is built through ongoing learning, respectful relationships and a willingness to walk alongside one another with openness and understanding.

Further information about our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan can be found in the St Andrew’s Hospital Annual Report via the link in our bio.

For Haylee, art is more than something she creates. It is identity, storytelling, healing and connection.

A proud Bidjara and Gungarri woman, Haylee works within the St Andrew’s Hospital Catering team, helping care for patients through the everyday moments that matter. Earlier this year, she was also commissioned by the to create an original artwork for the hospital coffee shop, bringing her stories, culture and creativity into a space shared by patients, visitors, staff and volunteers each day.

In this video, Haylee reflects on the power of expression, the importance of sharing culture and what it means to feel seen, supported and connected through art.

This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, “All In”, reminds us that reconciliation is not a single action, but an ongoing commitment to listening, learning and walking alongside one another with respect and understanding. Through our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan, St Andrew’s Hospital continues to strengthen relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, deepen cultural understanding and create spaces where culture, stories and community are genuinely respected, valued and celebrated.

We are grateful to Haylee for sharing her story and artistry with the St Andrew’s community. Her artwork within the hospital reflects the connection, culture and sense of community we strive to foster across St Andrew’s, while helping create spaces that feel warmer, more human and more connected for all who pass through them.

Joel’s journey in cardiac nursing began during a student placement on the St Andrew’s Cardiac Ward. Now, through the support of the Janet Hay Scholarship, he is continuing to build his expertise while caring for patients in one of the hospital’s most specialised areas.

Working in cardiac care means supporting people through moments that can be frightening and life-changing. For Joel, it’s the opportunity to guide patients through that experience with compassion, reassurance and clinical excellence that makes the role so meaningful.

His story is also a reflection of the support that exists across the St Andrew’s community. From colleagues and educators to managers, mentors, Foundation supporters and donors, there are so many people invested in helping nurses continue to learn, grow and provide the highest standard of care.

Your support of St Andrew’s Hospital Foundation helps make opportunities like the Janet Hay Scholarship possible, investing in the ongoing development of our nurses and strengthening patient care across the hospital for years to come.

Earlier this week, St Andrew’s Hospital Foundation welcomed volunteers to the Wellbeing Centre to celebrate National Volunteer Week and recognise the incredible contribution volunteers make across our hospital community.

The event brought together volunteers, Foundation representatives and hospital leaders to reflect on the care, compassion and generosity our volunteers bring to St Andrew’s every day.

As part of the celebration, several volunteers were recognised for remarkable years of service, including milestones of 5, 10, 15 and 30 years of volunteering. Their dedication is a powerful reflection of the lasting impact volunteers have on patients, families and staff alike.

A special thank you also to Kate from for beautifully catering the event and helping create such a warm and welcoming afternoon.

As National Volunteer Week draws to a close, we are reminded that the smallest acts of kindness can leave the biggest impression, and that volunteers remain an essential part of the caring and connected community at St Andrew’s Hospital.

To all of our volunteers, thank you. Your time, compassion and generosity continue to make a meaningful difference every single day.

As part of National Volunteer Week, we’re highlighting the people who generously give their time to support patients, staff and the wider St Andrew’s community.

In this video, volunteer Linda shares a glimpse into her weekly shift in the Chemotherapy Suite, where small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference to a patient’s day.

After moving to part-time work as a school teacher, Linda was looking for something meaningful to fill her time and stay connected with others. While the idea of volunteering in the chemotherapy ward initially felt a little daunting, she now says she couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. Through the volunteer program, she found a place where her time, care and presence could make a real difference, while also forming meaningful connections with staff and fellow volunteers along the way.

This year’s National Volunteer Week theme, “Your Year to Volunteer,” encourages Australians to explore the many ways volunteering can enrich both the community and their own lives.

To all of our volunteers, thank you for the care, warmth and generosity you bring to St Andrew’s every day.
