The Solstice: A Sacred Turning of the Wheel
As we approach the Solstice, we arrive at one of the most powerful turning points of the year.
The word solstice comes from the Latin solstitium, meaning "the sun stands still." For several days around the Solstice, the Sun appears to pause in its journey before reversing direction, marking a profound shift in the seasonal cycle. Across thousands of years and countless cultures, this moment has been honoured as a sacred threshold between what has been and what is yet to come.
On the June Solstice, the Northern and Southern Hemispheres experience opposite realities.
In the Northern Hemisphere, this is the Summer Solstice, the longest day and shortest night of the year. The Sun reaches its highest point in the sky, bathing the land in maximum light. It is a celebration of abundance, fertility, growth, vitality, and the fullness of life. Ancient peoples gathered to honour the life-giving power of the Sun, lighting fires, dancing, feasting, and offering prayers for continued prosperity.
In the Southern Hemisphere, this same Solstice marks the Winter Solstice, the longest night and shortest day of the year. Here, the darkness reaches its peak. Yet rather than being feared, this darkness was often revered. Ancient peoples understood that it was within the darkest night that the return of the light begins. The Winter Solstice became a symbol of rebirth, renewal, hope, and the promise that life will return once again.
Many ancient monuments around the world were built in alignment with the Solstice Sun. From the mysterious stone circles of Britain to temples in Egypt, Mesoamerica, and beyond, our ancestors watched the heavens closely and understood that the movements of the Sun were deeply connected to the rhythms of life on Earth.
For many ancient cultures, the Solstice was not simply an astronomical event—it was a spiritual one. It reminded people that all life moves in cycles. There are seasons of growth and seasons of rest. Times of expansion and times of retreat. Times when we stand fully in our light and times when we journey inward to discover what is waiting to be reborn.
The Solstice invites us to pause and reflect on where we find ourselves within these cycles.
If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, consider what has blossomed and matured within your life. What is reaching its fullest expression? What gifts, achievements, or wisdom are ready to be celebrated?
If you are in the Southern Hemisphere, consider what is calling you inward. What needs rest, reflection, or release? What new light is quietly beginning to stir beneath the surface, even if you cannot yet fully see it?
Regardless of where you live, the Solstice reminds us that change is constant. The wheel continues to turn. The longest day begins to shorten. The longest night begins to lighten. Nothing remains fixed forever.
This sacred pause between one season and the next offers us an opportunity to honour both the light and the darkness within ourselves, trusting that each serves its purpose in the great unfolding of our lives.
May this Solstice bring you clarity, wisdom, and a deeper connection to the rhythms of nature and your own soul.
Happy Solstice. ☀️❄️
