For anyone who has ever felt exhausted by the effort of becoming.
There is a chapter in The Stone in Your Hand called "The Witness." It speaks of the presence within you that has watched everything—every joy, every sorrow, every descent—and has never been touched by any of it.
"The witness does not need to be achieved. It has never been absent. It is what you are, beneath every layer of identity, every story, every wound, every hope. The work is not to become the witness. The work is to stop identifying with everything that is not the witness, so that what has always been true can be recognized at last."
You are not your anxiety. You are not your past. You are not the voice in your head that never stops talking. You are the one listening.
And that one has never been broken.
