I love this image because it really captures what it can be like to feel visually stimulated and overwhelmed.

It shows us how life and the various demands that it places on us can be silently (or loudly) asking something from us. Often all at once and unrelentingly.

And often how complex and conflicting each one of these expectations can be even on their own - which can often carry a sense of intensity in the conflict (eg. I want to eat the cupcake but feel like I can’t/shouldn’t).

So what can we do with that now? I have some thoughts:

1) Recognise how you feel. By acknowledging your internal reality, you can feel empowered by thinking about it from a more removed place. Removed because it isn’t just taking you over and ruling you, but that the awareness of it gives you more of a sense of control and agency. What is more, by holding space for your authentic subjetivity, you can practice sitting with the feelings from a lens of acceptance and welcome. This can come with its own sense of release and unburden.

2) Try reflecting on why these expectations matter so much to you. Where it comes from - the need for them to be addressed in a particular way, at a particular time (or even at all). Sometimes we may inherit ways of being/doing that come from somewhere/someone else but may not necessarily align with how we’d prefer to live our lives. Is there a way to renegotiate this with yourself and set new expectations?

3) Once you’ve figured out what you feel comfortable doing, start with the most important parts and do little bits at a time in a way that aligns with your capacity at that time. Chip away at it in a way that feels manageable for you.

4) Don’t be afraid to ask for help or input from others. Sometimes you may even pay for these services if you can manage it, give yourself permission to allow this as a gift for yourself - in service of you. If you could do it yourself, you would. Work on releasing all expectations about how the other will take in on and allow their independence and autonomy. They might just surprise you (or not! And that’s ok).

5) Give yourself grace and hold space for yourself. Life can be hard and being hard on yourself is only going to make you feel worse. It might feel foreign to be kind to yourself and that’s ok. It takes practice.

Whatever your ResponsibilityLand looks like this weekend, I hope you travel gently with yourself.

Happy Friday folks.

Before the day ends…happy Friday all.
