For millions of women, PCOS has always felt like a diagnosis that never quite explained what was actually happening to their body.
There has been a push to "re-brand" PCOS to something more appropriate - and this week it was announced!
PMOS: Polyendocrine Metabolic O***y Syndrome, is now the new name, recognising that it’s far more than ovarian cysts alone.
The new name better reflects the complex hormonal, metabolic and reproductive impacts many women experience, from irregular cycles and fertility challenges to insulin resistance, skin changes, weight fluctuations and mental health impacts.
"For many women, PCOS as an acronym has felt confusing, or misunderstood for years,” says FertilitySA Fertility Specialist and Medical Director, Dr. Bruno Radesic
“We fully support this change and for the 8-13% of Australian women that experience this condition - it acknowledges that it is broader and more complex than the old name suggested. Women deserve to feel seen, heard and properly supported in their care.”
