The journey toward a more balanced mind begins with what you do consistently: showing up for yourself, setting boundaries, practicing self-compassion, and asking for support when you need it. Real change takes time, patience, and courage but every step forward matters.

Avoidance is a natural coping strategy, especially when something feels overwhelming, uncomfortable, or emotionally unsafe. But while avoidance may bring temporary relief, it can also keep us stuck in cycles of fear, stress, and disconnection. 💜

Avoidance is when we stay away from situations, thoughts, feelings, or conversations because they feel uncomfortable, stressful, or overwhelming. Avoidance brings relief to whatever might be making us feel uncomfortable.

Examples include:
➡ Putting off a difficult conversation
➡ Procrastinating on a task that feels overwhelming
➡ Distracting yourself constantly
➡ Cancelling plans when anxiety rises
➡ Avoiding thinking about something upsetting

Short-term, avoidance often brings immediate relief. The stress or anxiety drops for a moment because you’ve escaped the situation. However, over time, avoidance can make things feel bigger and harder to face.

The more we avoid something, the more our brain learns things like: "This must be dangerous," or “I can’t face it.”

Progress often comes from small, manageable steps toward the things we avoid, gradually building your confidence in tackling challenging scenarios.

This way, we can learn: “This is uncomfortable, but I can cope.”

Mind to Mind is proud to put our support behind the Eagles WWTFC and Something In The Water for this weekend’s Wellbeing Home Match.

This Saturday, the Eagles take on Glenelg at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval in a game that’s about more than just footy.

Wellbeing has been a growing conversation across Adelaide lately, and rightly so. It’s encouraging to see that conversation moving beyond headlines and into real community spaces. Events like this matter because they bring people together, create visibility, and make wellbeing something we can actually engage with and talk about.

Full credit to the WWT Eagles for backing this initiative, and to Something In The Water for the work they’re doing to connect people and make things happen.

Change starts with awareness, and spaces like this help make that happen.

If you’re around, come down and be part of it.

Our thoughts can sometimes pull us backwards instead of helping us move forward. But learning to notice this can create space for something different. 🌤

Rumination is a pattern of repetitive thinking where your mind goes over the same concerns or questions without reaching a clear or helpful resolution.

It often invovles thinking in circles, revisiting the same situations, questions or worries repeatedly- without gaining new insight or moving to a solution.

It might sound like:
“Why did I do that?”
“What if I made the wrong decision?”
“Why does this always happen to me?”
“What if something happens?”

It can sometimes feel like problem-solving, because we are actively thinking, but it rarely leads to clear answers. Instead, rumination tends to keep our attention stuck on the problem, which can increase our distress.

To break the loop, one helpful shift is moving from “why?” questions, which often lead to more looping thoughts, toward “what can I do next?” which supports action. You could also practice noticing when your thinking becomes repetitive and try to gentle redirect your attention to something within your control.

Remember, learning to step out of unproductive mental loops can help you focus your energy on what actually supports you moving forward.

They can be intense, overwhelming, and convincing… but they’re also temporary and ever-changing.

So, how can we break the loop? One helpful shift is moving from “why?” questions, which often lead to more looping thoughts, toward “what can I do next?” which supports action. Another idea is to notice when your thinking becomes repetitive and try to gentle redirect your attention to something within your control.

A key takeaway to remember is that learning to step out of unproductive mental loops can help you focus your energy on what actually supports you moving forward.

It’s not uncommon for difficult thoughts and feelings to surface at night. Creating small moments of reflection during the day can help reduce that build-up.
