Osteoarthritis is most common in people over the age of 65 although people can start to develop symptoms earlier in their life. It is more common than diabetes and high blood pressure.
Currently national guidelines recommend that the best practice includes education, exercise and weight management as first line treatments. Surgery should be recommended last!
Education - if you understand what is happening in your body, you are more likely to stick to the management and return to better function.
Exercise - specific and functional strengthening of targeted muscles has the most evidence of any treatment, although needs to be combined with the other two.
Weight management - being overweight increases the risk of OA as over time the load through the joint has been increased and overloads it. We need healthy load management through our joints for optimal function!

We now have the ability to run GLA:D classes at our practice which utilises all of these factors and is currently the best practice for both hip and knee osteoarthritis. Please ask our staff for more information.

Women’s health week is dedicated to all women across Australia to make good health a priority.
Day 1 is all about implementing a little bit of movement in your day. Some ideas to create more activity in your day include;
▪️going for a walk with a friend (or your dog)
▪️encourage a “walking meeting” at work
▪️if you have kids, take them to the local park
▪️parking a little further away from work or the shops
Don’t make it complicated, just make it achievable!

Healthy bones Action Week | 23-29th August
Poor bone health affects 2 in 3 Australian’s and can lead to fractures, chronic pain and loss of independence.
3 things we all can do to take care of our bones
▪️ increase daily serves of calcium through milk, cheese or yogurt
▪️ go for a walk or commit to some form of regular exercise
▪️ spend time outdoors to get vitamin D; aim for 20 minutes during winter per day.
Let us know if you would like some exercise ideas, our Physio’s are here to help!
