🦴What is Shoulder Arthritis?

Shoulder arthritis occurs when the smooth cartilage that cushions the shoulder joint wears away over time, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

The shoulder has two main joints — the glenohumeral (ball and socket) and the AC joint. Arthritis can affect either, and is most common over 50, but may occur earlier after injury, instability, or previous surgery.

As it progresses, cartilage loss leads to bone-on-bone contact, inflammation, and reduced function.

💡When non-surgical options are no longer effective, surgical treatment may be considered, including shoulder replacement (total or reverse), hemiarthroplasty, or in selected early cases, arthroscopic debridement.

Treatment is individualised based on age, activity level, joint condition, and functional goals. Every patient is unique and your options will be discussed during your consultation with Dr Basel Masri.

What is Carpal Tunnel? 🖐️

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it passes through the wrist’s carpal tunnel. This can lead to pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand, most commonly affecting the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger.

Surgery may be recommended when symptoms persist despite conservative treatment, or if there is evidence of significant weakness or nerve compression.

📣 Exciting news is on the horizon for patients in Adelaide.

Dr Basel Masri is pleased to announce that robotic-assisted shoulder replacement surgery will soon be available in South Australia, bringing the latest in surgical technology to help personalise shoulder replacement procedures.

Dr Masri recently completed his certification in this advanced technology and looks forward to offering it to patients as soon as it becomes available later this year.

For people living with shoulder arthritis or ongoing shoulder pain, robotic-assisted surgery combines detailed 3D planning with robotic guidance to help surgeons perform shoulder replacement procedures with a high level of precision, tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy.
