Functional Canine

Functional Canine Led by Jackie Gowland, Animal Scientist and Certified Canine Nutritionist, Functional Canine integrates modern nutritional science with holistic principles.

Our NRC Diet Formulation services are provided to both pet owners and commercial business. There is a huge gap in current canine wellness services, products and community knowledge. Few products cater for dogs with allergies, particularly with allergies to factory farmed meats like beef and chicken. So few pet food companies understand the importance of removing chemicals, hormones, preservatives

and additives from their products to prevent allergies, gastrointestinal issues and nutritional disease, and to ensure the health and longevity of consumer's pets. Few pet owners are aware of how a truely healthy pet should look, should smell and should act because in today's society as there are so many unhealthy animals that 'unhealthy' has become the norm. This is why the Functional Canine was formed here in Adelaide. We want to change the norm. We want to change the way pet food is made. We want to change the way you think. We want your dog to the best dog it can be. WE CHALLENGE YOU TO BECOME A PART OF THE CANINE WELLNESS REVOLUTION

Arthritis in senior dogs is common, but this doesn’t mean they should suffer in silence.

Slowing down, hesitation on stairs, stiffness after rest, or playing less are often signs of chronic pain, not just getting older. The good news is there are natural ways to support mobility and quality of life without medication, from rehab and movement therapy to nutriceuticals, laser therapy, acupuncture, and a diet that reduces inflammation 🐾

A great resource for those just getting started and wanting to expand their understanding of the current pet food and veterinary industry.

Dr. Will Cole from The Art of Being Well interviewed one of my favourite holistic vets Dr. Judy.

For the full story and podcast link, see below ⬇️

“Your vet probably isn't telling you this...

3 in 4 dogs who reach age 10 get a cancer diagnosis. The average golden retriever lifespan has dropped from 17 years to 10. Something is very wrong.

Dr. Judy Morgan has been a vet for 40 years. She's written 9 books. And the traditional veterinary world has called her every version of "voodoo practitioner" for daring to ask why our pets are getting sicker. She sat down with Dr. Will Cole and didn't hold back:

👉 Commercial kibble is made from rendered animals that, according to the head of one of the country's biggest rendering companies, are virtually impossible to produce without euthanasia solution in them. The FDA's response? Not enough to worry about.

👉 Spaying or neutering at 6 months is essentially overnight menopause for a puppy. Scandinavia bans it without medical reason - and their dogs live longer.

👉 Flea and tick "meds" aren't repellents. They're neurotoxins. Your pet has to be bitten to deliver the chemical.

👉 Most core vaccines last a lifetime. Titer testing proves it. The annual booster card is marketing, not medicine.

If you've got a dog or a cat, you need to listen to this episode...”

Dogs understand far more than we give them credit for.

When life changes, I talk to my dog through it all, the stress, the travel, the routine shifts, because they pick up on so much more than words alone. They notice our tone, our body language, and our patterns. Keeping them feeling safe and included is important.

As your scent gradually fades from the environment, your dog is constantly processing those changes, which may explain why they react differently when you’ve been gone for minutes versus hours.

The nervous system, gut health, sleep, stress response, and nutritional intake are all connected.

Food won’t replace training, but the right nutritional support can help build a calmer, more resilient dog from the inside out.

Most people think dental disease is just about bad breath. When in fact, the oral microbiome impacts the whole body.

Bacteria from periodontal disease enters the bloodstream, directly impacting the heart, kidneys, and liver.

Oral health is part of every conversation I have about whole-body wellness. What your dog eats plays a direct role in oral microbiota and any build-up on their teeth.

I dropped the studies in the comments so you can read the research yourself. 👇

Detoxing is about supporting what your dog’s body already does every day.

Focus on fresh, balanced food, real hydration, movement, and reducing toxic load… because when the liver, gut, skin, and kidneys are supported, detox happens naturally. Overdoing it or rushing the process is where problems start.

A 2025 systematic review on the canine gut–brain axis found growing evidence that the gut microbiome influences neurotransmitters, inflammation, immune signalling, and behaviour in dogs. The review highlighted serotonin as a major focus, noting that around 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut, where microbes help regulate its production and function.

Supporting this, a 2019 study comparing aggressive, phobic, and behaviourally normal dogs found clear differences in gut microbiome composition between the groups, suggesting microbial imbalances may influence stress responses and behaviour.

Most senior dogs don’t need less food.
They need better nutrition support.

As dogs age, they become less efficient at using protein, which increases muscle loss, weakness, and reduced mobility over time.

This is why many low-protein, high-carb “senior diets” miss the mark.

Senior dogs need:
✔️ Quality protein
✔️ Adequate fat
✔️ Less reliance on processed carbs

The goal is not just more years, but stronger, healthier years.
