WHY IYENGAR YOGA?

You may notice something different when you walk into an Iyengar Yoga class.

Blocks, belts, bolsters, blankets, chairs and ropes are all part of our practice.

But the props aren’t there to make yoga easier.

They help us understand.

They can give support where it is needed, create space where there is restriction, bring awareness to areas we cannot yet feel, and allow us to stay in an asana long enough to observe its effects.

This means the practice can meet different bodies, ages and stages of life — without losing the integrity of the pose.

But Iyengar Yoga is about much more than props.

Through precision, alignment, sequencing and timing, we learn to pay attention.

At first we are observing the body.

Where are my feet?
What are my legs doing?
Is my spine extending?
Where am I gripping unnecessarily?

Gradually, that attention becomes quieter and more subtle.

We begin with the body, but yoga asks us to travel inward.

As B.K.S. Iyengar taught, the asana is not the destination.

It is a means of exploring ourselves.

This is why we practise Iyengar Yoga,

Do you know someone who is pregnant?
We have a dedicated Prenatal Yoga class at Om Yoga School, designed to support women as their bodies change through pregnancy.

No previous yoga experience is needed. The practice uses props and individual modifications to help women practise with support and confidence.

If you have a friend, daughter, sister or colleague who is expecting, I’d love you to pass this on to her. 🤍

Wednesdays 6pm-7pm.

WHY IS THIS YOGA?

Adho Mukha Vrksasana — handstand.

It would be easy to think the goal is simply to balance.

But the practice of yoga is in what we discover along the way.

Here I’m exploring the awareness of the back of the top leg — finding a little more extension, integration and, for a moment, a smidge of balance.

It’s a small adjustment, but that is where the practice becomes interesting.

Can I feel more?
Can I refine the action?
Can I remain attentive rather than simply trying harder?

In Iyengar Yoga, we learn to bring intelligence into every part of the body. Over time, what was once unconscious becomes conscious.

The balance may only last a moment.

The awareness is the practice.

This is why we practise yoga..

WHY YOGA?

There are so many ways to move our bodies.

We can go to the gym, do Pilates, run, cycle, swim or take a high-intensity class — and all of these can have enormous benefits.

So why yoga?

Because yoga asks something more of us than simply becoming fitter, stronger or more flexible.

We begin with the body, but we learn to pay attention.

How are we standing?
How are we breathing?
Where are we gripping?
Where are we dull?
Can we remain steady when something is difficult?
Can we be quiet without becoming passive?

Over time, the practice becomes less about “doing poses” and more about developing awareness.

The body is the starting point.

The deeper subject is ourselves.

This is why we practise yoga.

Why do we chant the Invocation to Patañjali?

At the beginning of our practice, we chant to acknowledge Patañjali and the lineage of yoga teachings passed from teacher to student.

The invocation helps us make the transition from the busyness of everyday life into the practice — bringing the mind towards attention, receptivity and quietness.

It reminds us that yoga is more than physical exercise. It is a practice for the whole person — body, mind and consciousness.

We chant with gratitude and humility, preparing ourselves to learn.

Atha yogānuśāsanam — Now, the teaching of yoga begins.

Rope 1 teaches us how to use the ropes to create extension and space in the body.

The support of the ropes helps us work more clearly through the legs, open the shoulders and chest, and lengthen the spine.

In forward bends, the ropes help us understand that we don’t simply bend forward — we first create length through the front body and spine, and then move from the hips.

The ropes give us support, but they also teach us direction and action.

Look forward to seeing you on the mat this week for Forward bends and Twists 🧘🏻‍♀️🕉️🙏🏻.

Viparita Karani to finish our exploration of twists today. 🧘🏻‍♀️🕉️💜

We began by elongating and opening the spine, creating the space needed to move more deeply into twisting actions.

In the standing twists, we explored how to stand firmly in the back leg to bring greater stability, lift and freedom to the spine. In the seated twists, we worked with the exhalation — first extending upwards, then using the breath to turn more deeply without losing that length.

And finally, Viparita Karani — allowing the spine and nervous system to become quiet after the work.

Great fun exploring the twists together today.

As Geetaji reminds us, “Twists are a boon.”

A beautiful practice of length, stability, breath and release.

SUNDAY SESSIONS WITH SAMANTHA 🌿
TWISTS | THIS SUNDAY 9–11AM
Through twisting we learn to lengthen before we turn — creating space through the spine while working deeply through the abdominal region. Twists can help maintain spinal mobility, release stiffness through the back and shoulders, support digestion and leave us feeling lighter, clearer and refreshed.

STANDING POSE WEEK 🌿

This week at Om Yoga School, we’ll refine the basic techniques of the standing poses, exploring how clear actions can bring greater stability, space and ease to our practice.

We’ll begin with Adho Mukha Virasana (Downward-Facing Hero Pose) — a quiet pose that prepares both the body and mind for standing work.

With the forehead supported and the arms extending forward, Adho Mukha Virasana helps to:

* lengthen and release the spine
* open the shoulders and side ribs
* create space through the back body
* soften unnecessary tension
* bring steadiness and focus to the mind

It also introduces actions we carry into the standing poses: extending from a stable base, lengthening both sides of the trunk, creating space across the chest and learning to work with effort without hardness.

From this quieter beginning, we’ll take these qualities into our standing poses and explore how good foundations and clear direction can help us find ease within stability.

Join us this week at Om Yoga School.
Come and explore the foundations of your practice. 🙏.
