From 1 July, a new pneumococcal vaccine, Capvaxive, has joined the National Immunisation Program (NIP), making it easier than ever for more Australians to protect themselves against serious pneumococcal disease.
You may now be eligible for a FREE vaccine if you are:
✅ Aged 65 years or older (previously 70+)
✅ An Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adult aged 25 years or older
✅ Aged 18 years or over with certain eligible medical conditions, including COPD and other conditions that increase your risk.
🛡️ What is pneumococcal disease?
Pneumococcal disease can cause serious infections such as pneumonia, bloodstream infections and meningitis. While some infections are mild, others can become life-threatening, especially in older adults and those with underlying health conditions.
Why Capvaxive?
Capvaxive is the newest pneumococcal vaccine available for adults and is designed to provide strong, long-lasting protection against the strains most likely to cause serious disease. For most eligible adults, only one dose is needed.
If you've had a previous pneumococcal vaccine, you may still be eligible for Capvaxive if it's been at least 12 months since your last dose.
