A student said something to me years ago that I think about a lot.
We were chatting after class, rolling up our mats, when she looked at me and said:
âI said to a friend that the reason I like coming to your classes is because youâre not flexible either.â
I had to laugh, because itâs entirely true.
After teaching more than 900 yoga classes, I still canât put my foot behind my head. I have stiff mornings, a tricky hip injury, and a belly that gets in the way of everything. My qualification to the women who walk through my door isnât that I have a gymnastâs bodyâitâs that I inhabit a normal, real, human one.
Because yoga isnât about bending ourselves into pretzels.
Yoga is simply any way we reconnect with ourself after living with stress, anxiety, and the general overwhelm of a busy life.
Sometimes that happens on a mat, spending an hour moving gently to quiet a noisy mind. But it also happens when you stop to look at a pink sky, sit quietly with a hot cup of tea, or walk beside the ocean. Itâs about presence, not performance.
If youâve been avoiding a movement class because you think youâre too stiff, too old, or too out of practice, I promise you: youâd fit right in here.
We are all just normal bodies learning how to breathe a little deeper and judge ourselves a little less.
Classes return on 24th August. I hope to see you there đ©·
