Blood pressure can drop markedly after a single session of aerobic exercise in both medicated and non-medicated hypertensive adults. This is because the blood vessels open up more for exercise and then do not immediately tighten back up when exercise ceases.
The effect decreases as time passes after exercise but can last up to 24 hours.
The photos below show a client's blood pressure before and after a mixed 30min weights and cardiovascular exercise session. Our exercise physiologists often take advantage of this effect to lower a person's blood pressure before a strength session.
