Now that the winter sport season is well underway and training has shifted to harder surfaces, many athletes are finding they’re pulling up sore after training sessions.

A big part of it often comes down to footwear.
Most boots are designed for grip (not for cushioning or load management) and when they’re used on firmer surfaces, the impact through your feet and lower legs increases significantly.

As training loads increase, limitations in strength, mobility or stability can become harder for the body to compensate for, which is often when niggling pain starts to appear.

Addressing these issues early can help improve comfort, reduce overload and keep you performing consistently throughout the season.

Shin splints are an overload problem.

Your foot is designed to absorb and distribute force. When it can’t due to stiffness or lack of mobility, that load has to go somewhere. Usually the shin.

If your lower leg muscles aren’t strong or coordinated enough for the load you’re placing on them, the shin bone takes the brunt.

When it comes to fixing shin splints, change comes from improving strength and movement coordination.

At Advanced Podiatry, we build resistance and prevent recurrence by focusing on shock absorption and muscle endurance.

If you are struggling with the pain of shin splints, you can reach out to us anytime at www.advancedpodiatry.net.au

Fatigue doesn’t just slow a runner down, it changes the way you move. And that’s often when pain starts to show up.

If there are underlying deficiencies, the body will start to compensate even more as the run goes on.

What might look like a small change in gait early in the run can become a much clearer pattern a few kilometres later. The body is no longer hiding the problem, it's amplifying it.

That’s why so many runners experience pain that comes and goes, or gets worse the longer they run.

They’re usually not developing a new injury mid-run, they’re uncovering a movement pattern that’s been there all along.

We use treadmill running assessments to observe your gait in real time and identify compensations that might otherwise be missed.

It gives us a clearer picture of why you’re loading certain structures and what’s actually driving your symptoms.

If one side always feels like it’s doing more of the work when you run, jump, or train, there’s usually a reason behind it.

This carousel breaks down a few simple ways we look at it in clinic and what we focus on in rehab.

If one side feels like it’s doing more of the work, it might be worth getting it checked.

A new sporting season is here, which means new surfaces you haven’t played on in months.

Every surface you play on changes how your body has to move. A court, a grass field, a gym floor, each one shifts the load differently, and your footwear plays a big role in how much of that load your muscles have to absorb.

When your body hasn't built the strength and control to handle those changes, that's when niggles turn into injuries.

Getting assessed now means we can build the preparation your sport demands, including the right conditioning to handle fast changes in load and surface throughout the season.
