Community Spotlight: Ali Heard 🩷
This June, if you spot one of our nurses walking through the cold, wind, rain or fog, be sure to give her a wave. For the fourth year running, Alexandra District Health nurse Ali Heard is taking on a fundraising challenge for breast cancer research. This year, she is participating in The Big Bold Walk! Committing to walk 100 kilometres throughout June to help make a difference for those affected by breast cancer.
Ali’s dedication goes far beyond clocking up kilometres. She fits her walks around busy shifts, family life and the challenges of winter, often heading out in conditions that would make most of us stay indoors. Her determination and compassion are qualities we see every day in her role as a nurse, and they’re just as evident in her fundraising efforts.
As Ali tackles her kilometres this month, keep an eye out for her on local roads and walking tracks. A friendly wave, beep or word of encouragement can go a long way on those cold winter days.
If you’d like to support Ali and help fund vital breast cancer research, donations can be made using the QR code.
Good luck, Ali. We’ll be cheering you on every step of the way! 👟💗

As National Reconciliation Week comes to a close, we reflect on the conversations, learning and shared experiences that have taken place across Alexandra District Health.
Last year staff had the opportunity to learn more about Taungurung culture, history and connection to Country through an informative and meaningful cultural session. Experiences like these help deepen our understanding and strengthen our commitment to providing respectful and culturally safe care.
In healthcare, reconciliation is more than recognition, it is action. One important action is asking every patient if they identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. While it may seem like a simple question, it helps ensure people can access appropriate support, services and care, while contributing to better health outcomes for First Nations peoples.
By continuing to listen, learn and ask the question, we all play a role in helping Close the Gap. Reconciliation is a journey that extends beyond this week, and one we are committed to walking together.

Joanne Honeysett, 'Aunty Jo' is a proud Taungurung woman & Elder living on Taungurung Country.
Aunty Jo is a wawa bik guide for the Taungurung Land & Waters Council, an artist and active community leader. She has been painting for over 30 years and has commissioned many of her artworks both internationally and within Australia. Aunty Jo is a self-taught artist, her paintings are all original one offs and inspired by Taungurung culture and her children.
Aunty Jo nurtures visitors on Country with warmth and compassion, creates a safe space for everyone to feel like part of her extended family, and uses her infectious passion for culture and community.
This artwork was commissioned by ADH in 2024, and represents our health service (centre) and all the communities surrounding it and their journeys to get there. It is proudly displayed in our entrance foyer.

This National Reconciliation Week, we’re highlighting the meaning and significance of the Taungurung Sovereign Flag, the Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag.

The Aboriginal Flag
Black represents Aboriginal people.
Red represents the earth, red ochre and spiritual connection to Country.
Yellow represents the sun, the giver of life.

The Torres Strait Islander Flag
Green represents the land.
Blue represents the sea.
Black represents Torres Strait Islander people.
The white Dhari (headdress) represents Torres Strait Islander culture.
The white star represents the five major island groups and navigation.

The Taungurung Sovereign Flag
Designed by Taungurung Elder Aunty Loraine Padgham and adopted in 2020, the Taungurung Sovereign Flag is a powerful symbol of Taungurung identity, culture and connection to Country.
The stars represent the Pleiades constellation, also known as the Seven Sisters. They sit on an ochre-coloured background, reflecting ochre found on Taungurung Country and traditionally used in ceremony.
The yellow curved line symbolises the ascent of the Taungurung people and reflects the mountains and rivers that shape Taungurung lands.
For the Taungurung people, the flag is a visual representation of identity, history and the enduring connection to Country.

By learning about the flags we fly, we deepen our understanding of the cultures, histories and communities they represent. This National Reconciliation Week, we encourage everyone to listen, learn and walk forward together.

As we begin National Reconciliation Week, we acknowledge that Alexandra District Health stands on Taungurung Country. We pay our respects to Taungurung Elders past, present and emerging, and recognise the deep and enduring connection First Nations peoples have to land, culture, community and tradition.

This week is an opportunity to walk forward together in the spirit of reconciliation, respect and understanding. It is a time to listen, learn and reflect on how far we have come, while continuing to grow together.

We are grateful for the privilege of caring for our community on this land and remain committed to fostering inclusive, culturally safe and respectful care for all.
