👋 Let’s answer some FAQs about cupping therapy 🤩 swipe for more!
➡️ What is cupping therapy?
Cupping therapy uses specialised suction cups placed on the skin to gently lift the underlying tissue. The suction helps improve blood flow, reduce muscle tension and may assist with pain relief and recovery.
At SWITCH, cupping is used as one of many treatment techniques. Your physiotherapist will only recommend it if it’s appropriate for your condition and treatment goals.
➡️ Does cupping leave marks?
Yes, it can. Circular marks are a common and normal response to cupping. They’re not bruises caused by trauma, and they don’t mean blood or “toxins” have been pulled out of your body. Instead, the suction temporarily brings blood closer to the surface of the skin by affecting the tiny capillaries beneath the skin. During dry cupping, the skin remains intact, so no blood is released.
The marks can range from light pink to deep purple, depending on your skin, the amount of suction used and individual factors. They typically fade within a few days to two weeks.
➡️ Does cupping hurt?
Most people find cupping comfortable and describe it as a tight pulling or stretching sensation rather than pain. If you experience any discomfort, your physiotherapist can adjust the pressure or remove the cups at any time.
➡️ What conditions can cupping help with?
Cupping may be used as part of a physiotherapy treatment plan for:
Muscle tightness and stiffness
Neck and back pain
Sports-related muscle soreness
Shoulder pain
Recovery after exercise
Your physiotherapist will assess whether cupping is suitable for your specific condition.
