A couple of our team members are also SES volunteers. It’s always a pleasure to help our volunteers look after themselves and each other.

This week one of our dedicated members, Sandra, delivered training to our team on creating psychologically healthy workplaces.

Sandra is an endorsed organisational psychologist and organisational development professional with over two decades of industry experience in both public and private sectors globally. She is the Managing Director of FIFO Focus.

The training night was engaging and well received by our members. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge with our team, Sandra!

Sleep is important. The recommended number of hours we should sleep each night is 7-9 hours. That’s because you need around 4 hours for physical repair and another 3-4 for mental repair. When on a fifo roster, that’s damn hard. So we recommend you start with committing to 7-9 every third night. Make that the night you don’t do much except for shower, eat, a short text to your loved ones, and bed. Nighty night!!

This is an emotion wheel. When it comes to feelings, we tend to use generic words to express our emotions: anger, sad, happy, surprised (middle of the wheel). If we delve deeper, we can get a clearer understanding about why we feel angry, sad, happy, surprise etc. With that clarity, we are better able to act and make ourselves, or someone you care about, feel better. Eg we’d do something different if we were feeling violated compared to feeling skeptical (both under the Angry banner). Let’s expand our emotion vocabulary for better mental health.

This weekend may bring up difficult emotions for some people.

If you're worried about someone, check in to let them know you're thinking about them, and offer to support them in any way you can.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

It's RU OK day. The day to remind us that there are people who may be struggling at the moment, and that person could also be you. So take a moment to check in with yourself and others.

Here at FIFO Focus, we thought we'd take a different slant on how to have a conversation. Since we focus on the prevention of harm, here are some ideas on how to help a mate who may be experiencing a psychosocial hazard.

Christmas time can mean different things to different people. If this is happy time, embrace and appreciate every minute of it. If it’s not a great time, acknowledge how you feel and remind yourself you will get through it like you have all the other times. If you are temporarily separated from your loved ones, redefine and/or postpone what Christmas means to you. Whichever your situation. We are sending love to you.

Sandra Lam, Managing Director and Principal Psychologist at FIFO Focus, spoke to the West Australian about the importance of connectedness, self care and looking out for each other for FIFO workers and their families over the Christmas period. Checkout the article “Fears for mental health of FIFO families this Christmas following unprecedented year of social isolation” in today’s paper.

With the pain of separation from friends and family heightened after an unprecedented year of social isolation, experts say FIFO workers have never been under as much pressure.
