Its with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to our long time service Manager, Dian Edwards, who has just retired from Namatjira Haven.

Dian came to us 27 years ago and stepped into the service manager role in 2006. She took over being the manager in a period of great uncertainty with Nama closing for a few years prior. Dian's stewardship has seen Namatjira grow and expand fully realizing Pastor Frank Roberts vision for Namatjira Haven when it was founded in 1979.

She has worked tirelessly to champion the cause and has a deep passion for Aboriginal culture, making sure Namatjira is culturally safe for the men who come to us for healing, our programs are culturally appropriate, and that the philosophy that underpins how Namatjira is run.

Dian’s management has brought Namatjira to financial security , new buildings, a gymnasium, and an art room for the residents to express themselves. A community hall with a stage and sound recording. Extensive planting in the gardens, a bush tucker trail, and sustainable ways of doing things, from growing food on site to solar arrays for power. Her fingerprints are all over Namatjira Haven and will be for a long time.

Dian has been a CEO, a project manager, an administrator, a creative and visionary and a mum all wrapped into one for everyone that passed through our doors. And over 2000 men have come to Namatjira to find healing in Dian`s time. And we are thankful for her.

She has also been one of the driving forces for many years alongside Aunty Sandra Bolt in the advocacy and creation of our new planned women and childrens service ‘Aunty Sandras Place’.

In the wise words of Uncle Phil Roberts at Dians leaving event last week ‘’When someone writes the history of Namatjira Haven in 50 or 100 years, Dians stewardship will be remembered as its most important moment’’ We agree!!!

Dian , you will be missed greatly but wish you all the best in your well deserved retirement.

Eating good healthy food is an essential part of healing. Every Year Namatjira grows thousands of $$ worth of food that goes towards our residents health and wellbeing.

Last year we started to rebuild our vegetable garden and put in a purpose built greenhouse to be able to grow more food all year around for our residents.

Many residents over the time helped us dig it out, build the structure and prepare the beds.

We will have this for many years to help support many Aboriginal men find 'Gulgihwen'. Pretty neat eh!

An Important part of 'Gulgihwen' (Change) and the healing journey is re-connection to culture and community.

Our residents recently celebrated NAIDOC Week by attending bothe the Ballina march and also at the Tweed Heads NAIDOC week march.

At Tweed - We marched and met the Queensland mob at the border and marched together.Gathering for a welcome, speeches, and corroboree from the Minjungbal and Torres Strait Islander mob.

At Ballina - our residents screen printed some shirts and wore them to the march. Afterwards the everyone gathered for a welcome to country, speeches, and watched corroboree from the local Nyangbal mob.

Two great days!

Namatjira Havens 'Gulgihwen program' isnt just about taking space and healing, part of that process is setting ourselves up for new potentials and a healthy path in life after our residents leave Namatjira.

The men just completed the DIGGIT Program at our friends Namabunda farm (civil construction training program).

Our Residents had taken place in a course where they learnt how to operate both skid steer and excavator machines. This included theory and practical application training

We even had Ex NRL player come along Preston Campbell and presented the achievment at an award ceremony.

The men also had the opportunity through this to link in with employment agencies and exchange and learn details with opportunity

Everyone was super grateful!

Check it out. ..

The men from our 'Gulgihwen' program of change recently went out on a cultural outing to Chinamens Beach in Evans Head.

Whilst walking and sitting on country we heard about our dream time story, ‘The three Brothers’. And engaged in some traditional fishing practices.

Getting out on, and connecting with country is an important part of healing. Country teaches us to be present when we listen to it...and its always there...

And it was a beautiful day!

Check it out!

Recently the Men from the 'Gulgiwhen' program had a cultural camp out on country.

They walked the land , connected with country and learned the story of the Goanna and its cultural significance to the Bundjalung Nation among many other things

Connection to country is an important part of healing and finding presence again. Keeping the of the stories of the land , its animals and their significance is that stewardship.

Country heals us when we let it and its always there......

In 2024 we began our '4 Rivers' arts and cultural program for the Aboriginal men who come to Namatjira for healing.

The ‘4 Rivers’ name signifies the four rivers that form the traditional boundary of the Bundjalung Nation- the Tweed, Wilson, Richmond and Clarence rivers respectively

Since this time our residents have engaged in art therapy, traditional painting, screen-printing, music and song writing workshops, dance workshops, and craft classes and much more.

With weekly facilitators helping the men find their creative voice and expressing this through culture, healing and connection.

Its been a big success so far and some of the creations along the way have been amazing!
