What is it?

Osgood-Schlatter disease is a condition where the growth plate at the top of the shin bone (tibia) and just below the kneecap becomes irritated.

It is characterised by pain and swelling below the knee joint and may be accompanied by a small bump in the area.

What causes it?

Osgood-Schlatter is caused by overuse of the quadriceps and its patellar tendon, which connects the kneecap (patella) to the tibia. The growth plate in the bone, lies deep to this tendon attachment at top of the tibia, thus become painful from tension load.

Dance and some sports often require high amounts of jump take off and landing, which increase the patellar tendon transfer load to the growth plate area. If this load is too extreme with limited recovery time, young dancers or sports people may develop this condition, especially if they are experiencing a growth spurt.

What can we do to help?
Physiotherapy management typically consists of:
- Personalised strengthening program including Pilates and low impact training
- Advice on activity modification at dance or sport
- Massage of surrounding muscles
- Taping

What is it?

Sacroiliac joint (SIJ) dysfunction refers to pain and poor biomecanics around the SIJ. The SIJ is the connection point between the lower spine (sacrum) and the upper pelvis (ilium).

SIJ dysfunction is an umbrella term and can present differently between individuals, but the common denominator in all cases is that the joint is causing pain and difficulties in weight bearing through one side of the back and pelvis.

What causes it?
- In pre/post-partum women, it can occur due to:
- Pregnancy hormone related ligament laxity
- Increased load on the joint
- Structural changes

Other reasons include:
- Repetitive asymmetric stress such as twisting in golf
- Falling onto the joint
- Arthritis

What can we do to help?
- Physiotherapy management typically consists of:
- Personalised core and glute strengthening program
- Massage and muscle energy techniques
- Supportive devices such as taping or sacroiliac belts
- Activity modification advice
