Most people assume their partner or adult children could simply step in and manage their finances if something happened to them, but being your closest family member does not automatically give someone legal authority over accounts, bills, property or other financial matters held in your name.

A Power of Attorney allows you to choose who can act for you, while an Enduring Power of Attorney can continue if you lose decision-making capacity. What these documents cover, and what you may need for health and lifestyle decisions, varies depending on where you live in Australia.

It is worth getting the right documents in place before they are needed, then making sure the people you trust know where they are kept.

Grief comes with a surprising amount of admin.

You can’t make grief easier for the people you love, but you can make the practical side of what comes next less overwhelming.
