Women’s Health Week is next week, and for us, women’s health is about more than the conversations that are easy to have.

It’s also about making sure women who have experienced female ge***al mutilation can access the care, education and support they need.

Since 2018, Desert Flower has supported survivors of FGM through psychological, social and specialist medical care, with Dr Fariba and the team working to help close a gap that has existed in the Western medical system.

One of the most important things to know about gynaecological cancer? There isn’t just one type, and there isn’t one symptom to look for.

September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month, and a reminder to know what’s usual for your body.

A new, unusual or persistent change doesn’t automatically mean cancer. There are many possible causes. But if something has changed for you, it’s worth mentioning to your doctor.

Awareness isn’t about worrying about every symptom. It’s about knowing when something feels different for you. 💜

That's the span of Dr Alexandra Carey's work at FBW.

Her special interest is vulval care and colposcopy, so if you've had an abnormal cervical screening result and nobody's really explained what comes next, that's her world.

She also looks after the things women are so often told to live with. Periods that have never been manageable. Pain that's been brushed off. Whatever crops up, as she puts it.

Alyra Biotech, a proudly Adelaide-based company led by Associate Professor Susan Evans, has developed a new intrauterine device designed to help people living with difficult-to-manage period, pelvic and/or joint pain — and they’re now recruiting for their newest clinical trial.

Following the successful completion of the first trial of the Alyra Device in 2024, Alyra Biotech is seeking new participants, particularly those women who either don’t have endometriosis, or don’t have active endometriosis lesions. They can easily help you sort out if this is you. You’ll be cared for throughout the study by Professor Louise Hull and the team at PARC Clinical Research, Royal Adelaide Hospital, and you’re free to withdraw at any time if the device doesn’t suit you.

There's a wall in our clinic we've almost run out of room on.

Filled to the brim with cards and notes.

Some went up last week. Some have been there for years, from women we still think about.

We didn't put them up for the compliments. They're there because of what it takes to write one. The years of being told it was normal. The appointments that went nowhere. The morning someone finally sat down and said, I believe you.

That's why we do, what we do.

To every woman who has walked through our doors and trusted us with the things nobody else would talk about, thank you.

For women, by women.

2026 is not a place for taboo subjects.

Periods. Period pain. Painful s*x. An abnormal screening result. The things women have carried quietly for years and never said out loud. All common. All worth talking about. And not one of them makes you dramatic, or too much.

You are not a diagnosis. You're a whole person, and your body is worth looking after.

So value yourself. Move it, feed it well, keep a bit of headspace that's just yours. Read real books. Do your own research instead of trusting the first thing a screen tells you.

And when something feels off, pick up the phone and talk to a real person. Out loud. There's an energy in that you'll never get from typing it into an app at midnight.

Dr Fariba's message to every woman in her 20s: we're well past keeping quiet.

A lot of women get all the way to booking a specialist, hit the word "referral," and quietly slide it into the too-hard basket. Another appointment, another cost, another thing to organise when you already don't feel well.

A referral may seem overwhelming, but it's the first small step in often getting answers.

You rehearse the questions in your mind over, and over again. Then you get in the room and only mention one thing.

The heavy periods. The pain during s*x. The bleeding that isn't quite right. The question you've been sitting on for months. It all stays in your head, because you don't want to be the patient who takes too long.

So here's your reminder. There's no such thing as too many questions here. Bring the whole list. Say the awkward part out loud. Ask the thing that's been quietly worrying you.

Your appointment isn't a favour we're doing you. It's yours, every minute of it.
