Finding You in You
Chapter 1 Motherâs first nose bleed
So youâre feeling wobbly, unbalanced, lost. You keep your eyes tightly shut. Another day started. You state the affirmations you have been saying for years, Iâm happy and grateful for the bed I sleep in, the coffee I drink. âŠâŠ.but it doesnât feel like it. The other thoughts intrude, could you die peacefully and no one would notice? Pushing the blanket off feels a weight, and putting your feet on the floor is like stepping onto a hard rock with sharp edges. Even the shower, when you get to it, is not soothing, and the phone youâre not going near that. Maybe a quick peep. Oh no, look at those bi***es having a wonderful time. So you throw the new expensive phone across the room hitting your precious cat on the nose. Now you are convinced you are a violent, uncaring person, poor kitty!
And then comes the tsunami of negative thoughts, the things you should do, or must do, the mistakes, the f**k ups, the broken relationships, the self-critic, looping nicely and tightly around your self-worth and self-esteem piercing you with icicles of self-doubt. You agree it is not going to be a good day. Back under the blanket. Eyes shut tight.
The pile of self-help books neatly stacked covers the red wall. Why have you a red wall? Irritability screams inside you, you were told the answers are in the book, thatâs not true. You must move them to the garage out of sight. You wonder if you can ever get to a place of calmness, fearlessness, happiness any time soon. How confusing and horrible the world gets.
You wonder if anyone can be on top of the world ever. You swallowed the saying âyouâve made your bed youâve got to lie in itâ a long time ago. You believe youâll not have anything better than you already have, there is no evidence it can or will happen for you. But it does happen for others, youâve seen evidence on social media of those people exactly unlike you, achieving fame and fortune. Their relationships, work, finances all in sync, flowing beautifully. Even worse they never have a bad day. How you wish you could have even a small bit, winning the lottery would be a good start. Thatâs enough to send you back under the blanket for the rest of the day, week, year.
But hold on, what if there is a way out? That would be nice, wouldn't it? Life is very busy though, have you got the time?
You met that friend the other day, you know the one, who has it together. You listened as she went on and on about herself. The holidays, the perfect marriages, the relationships , money, popularity. You waited for a pause, even if it was to complain, but it never came. You ate your food in lumps and greedily, determinately drank the drink. You were taken aback; the slurping noise you made with the straw in the ice, did not interrupt the babble coming from the mouth. You graciously repressed the self doubt and it burned your eyes and choked your breath. Then the indigestion came. The self-talk screamed louder than ever, âyou are useless,â you donât do anything right, you are hopelessâ. You run fast and as far away as possible but that voice travels with you. Your poor friend, she didnât deserve that, you didnât mean to hurt her feelings. You try hard to please others, to be nice, to make them like you.
Werenât you told as a child itâs important that others like you? Remember that time you refused to share your favourite toy. That child you had to endure, wanted your favourite toy as well and your parents agreed. They had their serious, disapproving faces on and you did as they said, even when s/he broke it right in front of your eyes. âYou should shareâ they said. âPeople like you when you are niceâ. And when you shouted âNoâ your fatherâs face turned purple with burst capillaries and your mother had her first nose bleed. Your voice muted forgot to waken.
Watch out for Chapter 2 coming soon.
