Fungal network in natural soils more than 100 quadrillion kilometres long help trees and plants to grow and survive the Changing Climate!!
There was once many millions more Mycorrhizal Fungi silk threads like microscopic strands running endlessly through the earths soils, but the invention of modern industrial farming methods with its soil disturbance by ploughing, ripping and rotary hoeing has smashed absolutely every living thing, literally killing the worlds soils, and that is without talking about all the millions of tons of chemical fertilizers such as Phosphates and Nitrogen added in poisonous quantities killing the last remnants of the soils living biome such as Bacteria and Protozoa.
The murder of the countless millions of invertebrates such as worms, man’s indicator of soil health and fertility, these are the farmers friend and tireless worker.
Think of the crazy clearing of forests without any thought for the future of nature. The disruption of a complicated, special ecosystem, replaced by monoculture and chemical growing in paddocks that stretch beyond the horizon. The huge reduction of insects over the years and how it has reduced the number of frogs, lizards, small and large birds and even dragonflies in the landscape.
Even in town the drop in numbers of sparrows and swallows in the main street, as you sip your coffee sitting enjoying life without even a fly to whisk away. As you drive home there is not a single insect smudge on your windscreen, yes, it is nice in some ways but is it good, and do you see the wonderful native butterflies like you used to just a few years ago, do you have lots of honeybees in your flowers.
Thank goodness that some of our farmers have seen the light and are willing to change their ways, they are a refreshing light, we love their thought and determination, and we wish them every success in the future.
