Rehab And Repair Physio

Rehab And Repair Physio Physiotherapy clinic in Auburn. Women's Health, Sports injuries, Musculoskeletal, Occupational injuries and upper limb injuries/arthritis.

Masters level training in Continence and Pelvic Health Physiotherapy. My name is Melissa Harris, I have been a Clare Valley resident for 14 years and lived in Auburn for 13 of those. I started Rehab and Repair Physio clinic in 2014 with the aim to bring quality physiotherapy and health services to the southern end of The Valley. I have over 20 years physiotherapy experience in hospital settings an

d private physio clinics. My special interest areas include; hand and upper limb conditions, Women's Health and general musculoskeletal and sports conditions. My clinical treatment includes hands on therapy, exercise prescription and both 1:1 and group Pilates mat classes. I have previously worked in the Hand Therapy area both in Public Hospital and Private Practice for over 6 years. I spent 2 years in Royal Adelaide Hand Therapy unit (plastic surgery, orthopedics and burns) and subsequent to this 3.5 years in a private Hand Therapy clinic treating both acute and chronic upper limb conditions. I have skills in thermoplastic splint fabrication for the fingers, thumb and upper limb in addition to scar management and hand specific exercise prescription. I completed post grad qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety Management in 2012 and utilise the broader training this provided me when I treat and manage industrial injuries and provide occupational physio services. On request I can provide Worksite Assessments, manual task risk assessments, and assist in ergonomic workstation review. I have worked as a Physio in Clare for 3 years until my first child arrived 11 years ago. I had a short hiatus away from clinical Physiotherapy (for 6months) when I worked as a Return to Work Consultant for WorkCover but I missed the connection with my local community that I experienced as a Physio in Clare. For that reason I started up Rehab and Repair Physio in 2014. Since then I have been lucky enough to have a second little girl which has sparked my interest in a 3rd area; Women's Health. Over the last few years I have done further professional development training to hone skills in Pelvic Floor Muscle Assessment and training for prevention and management of related areas including; Post Natal Care, Urinary and Bowel Incontinence and Pelvic Organ Prolapse. To progress this expertise and competence, in 2022 I embarked in further study starting my Masters in Clinical Physiotherapy; Continence and Women's Health through Curtin University (Perth). I graduated with Distinction from the Masters in January 2024 and with the additional honour of obtaining Dux of my graduating year. Research we conducted as part of our masters was published in the International Urogynaecology Journal. I was also fortunate enough to present this research regarding Australian pessary management in the National Conference on Incontinence conference in 2023 and in the United Kingdom Continence Society conference in 2024. I have further plans to continue my study in prolapse management in 2025 and become qualified in providing pessary management as a non surgical option for local women with prolapse. As with so many conditions prevention is better then cure, and early management is better then delayed, so I encourage people with any questions or uncertainties regarding their pelvic floor function to make contact so we can optimise your pelvic health and keep you active, fit and functioning at your best!

It’s been a bit of hand therapy week this week! Wrist and finger fractures, neural compressions, arthritis, Kienbock’s disease, CRPS, DeQuervains thumb tenosynovitis and some post ops.

A couple of fun splints this week included a circumferential wrist splint for a very creative sole (I did not decorate that one…) and a finger splint for my 10yo after little finger dislocation (who thankfully still managed to play her 2 netball games with the finger safe and sound!)

With netball and football season reaching the half way mark, don’t let those finger injuries slip by! We can still keep you playing and your fingers out of further trouble with a simple splint!

28hours of PD in three days… National continence conference nearly done! Managed to get a run and a weights session in (sitting in chairs for 3 days is definitely not my favourite thing!!). Favourite presentation was on mental health in menopause, some great surgical presentations and some bowel updates! Lots of discussion (and rightly so) on the mental health issues with the silent conditions of incontinence and prolapse…Massive mix of multi-disciplinary speakers!

If you are keen, quick little read here! Dysfunction in the pelvic floor muscles are not always about weakness, sometimes we need to actually “relax” them! A pelvic floor assessment is the only way to know which way you need to go and how may reps or how long to hold for! Definitely not a one size fits all approach!!!

Clinic closed today! I’m in the final throws of my last uni assignment (ever!) (yes completely done, no more study I promise!!)
What does that look like? My head is as chaotic as my desktop… so many tabs open and it’s only 9am!
3500 word triple case study assignment on three different women with complex prolapse. Let’s get this thing wrapped up! Well at least written….may take another day to cut the words back!!

I returned to the ‘scene of the crime’ on the weekend!! 22 years since graduating UNISA, two physiotherapy related university degree’s later and I was back on campus completing my second (and final) intensive practical component for my Post Graduate Certificate in the Conservative Management of Pelvic Organ Prolapse. The year long study has involved diving deeper into the complexities of female pelvic organ prolapse, extending my scope beyond even that of my Masters in Continence and Pelvic Health training.

Conservative management of Pelvic Organ Prolapse involves both lifestyle education, pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation but also, a life changing component for some women , are the use of vaginal support pessaries. While there are short cut courses available to learn how to fit pessaries, short cuts are never the way I approach Women’s Health!! It is too complex an area to do it such disservice and the hundred’s of hours I have spent this year delving specifically into prolapse has been brilliant (albeit, I am definitely ready to finish study…). The last weekend involved more advanced practices such as utilisation of speculums, more complex methods of assessing pelvic floor function in addition to the highlight of adding cube and Gellhorn pessaries to my repertoire of pessary prescription.

At some stage, I will do an information post about prolapse, management, and pessaries, but between Uni, a massive clinic load and family, I just don’t have time for crazy things like Facebook posts, videos, marketing!!! Current wait list for an appointment is 3.5 weeks, so I do apologise for those who have called over the last couple of weeks and we have been unable to get you in. The cancellation list is a living being, so do still keep trying as we will actively work through that list and endeavour to bring those forward who are waiting!
