We said no family is "normal" β€” so here's the real question underneath it: not "is my family good?", but what actually helps a family?

It's not being conflict-free. The family that never argues doesn't exist. What helps is being able to have the hard conversation and still find a way back to each other.

One of the most useful ideas here comes from family therapist Dr Murray Bowen: differentiation β€” the ability to stay close to the people you love while still being your own person. Connected, but not lost in each other. Separate, but not cut off. You can also learn more about this on Dr Jenny Brown's podcast the Parent Hope Project.

Families thrive not when everyone's the same, but when there's room to be both.
And you don't need everyone on board to begin. Sometimes it starts with one person deciding the pattern can change.

Because families rarely live under one roof anymore, sessions can happen online too β€” so a parent here and adult kids interstate can all be in the room together.

Have you ever found yourself thinking, "I know it happened years ago… so why does it still affect me?"
If so, you're not failing to cope β€” and you're definitely not weak. More often, it's your nervous system still doing its job: trying to keep you safe. πŸ’›
Here's one way to picture it. An everyday memory gets filed away as "the past." But a traumatic one can get filed differently β€” right at the front of your mind, marked "URGENT." So anything that stirs it brings it straight back, ready to switch on your protective responses, even when the danger is long gone. Your thinking mind knows you're safe. Your body isn't so sure yet.
And trauma isn't always one big event. Sometimes it builds quietly β€” through feeling unsafe, unseen or powerless over time.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain re-file those "stuck" experiences β€” so a memory can start to feel like something that happened, rather than something that keeps happening inside you. It doesn't ask you to relive every detail, and safety and pace come first.
Most people we work with aren't chasing a symptom score. They want to feel like themselves again. To be present with their kids. To sleep without replaying the past.
Swipe through to understand how it works πŸ‘† β€” and if you're wondering whether EMDR might be right for you, the link's in our bio, or send us a message.

Presenter Spotlight: Brooke Shakspeare 🐴

Brooke has spent her life alongside horses.

She grew up with them on a farm in Western Queensland, and that connection carried through into her professional life.

As an accredited mental health social worker, psychotherapist and equine-assisted therapy practitioner, Brooke’s career has been shaped by learning what horses can teach us about holding the hardest work.

At EATA's 10th Anniversary Conference, Brooke will explore a question at the heart of trauma practice: What does it take to support people experiencing complex trauma, while also sustaining the clinician holding that work? 🌿

In her presentation, The Parts That Come Together: A Framework for Holding Complex Trauma Through an Equine-Assisted Lens, Brooke will introduce an original clinical framework developed to explore what clinicians need to hold, embody and be supported by when working with complex trauma.

The framework centres on three interconnected domains:

🧠 Knowing and Understanding: intuition, deep knowing, self-knowledge, clinical and professional knowledge, multidisciplinary collaboration, systemic practice skills and a commitment to growth.

🌱 Capacity, Regulation and Embodiment: the clinician's own nervous system, window of capacity, felt safety, co-regulation, rest, somatic awareness and impacts of vicarious trauma.

🀝 Connection, Support and Belonging: relational team safety, felt sense of connection, meaning-making, belonging and being seen by your organisation, team and community.

Brooke will look at the unique opportunities horses offer to each of these domains, and introduce the concept of antifragility: looking beyond resilience to how clinicians can not only withstand complex trauma work, but experience growth through it when the right supports and resources are in place.

Brooke is also an Accredited EMDR Practitioner and Director of Therapywell Allied Health and Wellbeing, a multidisciplinary practice based in Brisbane.

Her clinical work spans complex PTSD and developmental trauma across the lifespan, including work with first responders and neurodivergent individuals.

She integrates trauma-informed, systemic, nature-based and somatic approaches into her practice, including Resource Therapy and other somatic modalities.

She has practised equine-assisted therapy since 2016, following her equine facilitated wellness training with the Professional Association for Equine Facilitated Wellness in Canada, building on a connection with horses that began generations before her professional work.

We look forward to welcoming Brooke and hearing her fascinating - and important - presentation✨

Everyone said it would get easier by now.

The last child moves out. A relationship ends - even when it was your choice to end things. A career you built over twenty years quietly stops fitting. From the outside, these look like milestones. From the inside, they can feel like standing in a doorway you didn't quite choose: not in the old life anymore, not yet in the new one.
If that's you, you don't need to have the words for it before you begin.

Some of what women bring to this work: separation and relationship endings Β· the empty nest and a shifting sense of self Β· career change, burnout or loss of direction Β· anxiety, low mood, or not feeling quite like yourself Β· the emotional weight of perimenopause and menopause Β· grief, and the quiet turning points of midlife.

Jannie Olsen works with women navigating exactly this kind of in-between. She draws on solution-focused, mindfulness-based, interpersonal and art psychotherapy approaches β€” tailored to you. Sometimes that's talking things through; sometimes it's a more creative, image-based way in, for when a season of change is hard to say out loud. You don't need to be "good at art." You just need somewhere to bring it.
Jannie has current availability for new clients β€” in person in Brisbane (Auchenflower & Upper Mount Gravatt) and via telehealth across Australia. Sessions may be eligible for a Medicare rebate with a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP.

GPs & referrers: Jannie warmly welcomes referrals for women in life transition.

Thinking about starting therapy and wondering how to make it more affordable? If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP (often called a Mental Health Care Plan), you may be able to see Jannie Olsen with a Medicare rebate.
Jannie is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, Family Therapist and Art Psychotherapist. Because she is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, sessions with her can be claimed under Medicare's Better Access initiative β€” up to 10 individual sessions in a calendar year, with a referral and plan from your GP (your GP will advise how many are included).
She works with children, adolescents, adults and families navigating trauma, grief, parenting stress, new diagnoses, and emotional or behavioural difficulties. Alongside talk therapy, Jannie brings art psychotherapy and creative approaches, using image, colour and shape as another way to explore what can be hard to put into words. You do not need to be artistic.
A Medicare rebate reduces the cost of each session rather than making it free; our team can walk you through the fees and any gap.
How to get started: see your GP to discuss a Mental Health Treatment Plan and ask for a referral to Jannie at Therapywell, then get in touch with us to arrange your first session.

Trauma, neurodiversity and mental health difficulties are often interconnected, and don't exist in silos as stand alone challenges. They weave together β€” and we believe care should too.

That's why Therapywell was deliberately built as one integrated team: psychology, mental health social work (including EMDR), occupational therapy, speech pathology, family therapy and equine facilitated therapy β€” under one roof, with one shared approach that is trauma-informed and neuroaffirming across every discipline.

What that means for you in practice: your story, told once β€” our Client Care Team listens first and matches you deliberately. Clinicians who actually talk to each other, with your consent, so your care stays joined-up and holistic instead of happening in silos. And when needs change, the next discipline is down the hall β€” not another referral, waitlist and intake.

So many of the people we support live at the intersection: the Autistic adult whose anxiety is also sensory overload. The child whose "behaviour" is a nervous system asking for help.

The late-diagnosed ADHDer untangling burnout from a lifetime of masking. That intersection is where we work, every day.

Two clinics β€” Upper Mount Gravatt and Auchenflower β€” plus telehealth Australia-wide. Accessible via Medicare Mental Health Care Plans and Chronic Disease Management Plans, NDIS, private health, first responder self-referral, or privately.

One team, around the whole of you. Details in bio.

GPs, paediatricians and support coordinators β€” this is exactly the complex, multidisciplinary referral we're built for. We triage promptly and always close the loop with you.

Burnout doesn't arrive all at once. It grows quietly in the gaps β€” when one part of us has been carrying what three parts were built to share.
This is from The Parts That Come Together β€” a framework for understanding what we need to sustain ourselves through hard seasons. Three domains hold us: what we know and understand, our capacity and regulation, and our connection and support.
When the parts are present, hard seasons can be held. When they pull apart β€” and they will, for all of us β€” that's not failure. It's a predictable, human response to an impossible weight.
If your parts need some support coming back together, we're here.

We're so pleased to welcome Caitlin Mumme to Therapywell β€” come and meet our wonderful Occupational Therapist.

Caitlin works with people across the lifespan navigating neurodivergence, mental health and life's many transitions β€” and is especially passionate about supporting Autistic and ADHD individuals, including those diagnosed later in life, to understand themselves and build lives that feel manageable, meaningful and authentic.
Her approach is neuroaffirming, trauma-informed and refreshingly human.

Sessions are collaborative and practical β€” problem-solving, reflection, honesty and humour, in the service of figuring out what actually helps. No judgement, no pressure, and no need to mask.

OT with Caitlin can involve emotional and sensory regulation supports, executive functioning strategies, routine and environment design, practical skills for daily living, and psychoeducation for clients, carers and support networks.

Caitlin sees clients at Upper Mount Gravatt (Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays) and Auchenflower (Wednesdays and Thursdays). Her services are accessible through the NDIS, a Medicare Chronic Disease Management Plan from your GP, private health, or privately β€” no referral needed.
