⚠ You might have seen a bit on the news about diphtheria, so here's a short summary:
Diphtheria is a serious infection of the respiratory tract or skin, and it can cause severe illness or death. Thanks to vaccinations, diphtheria is uncommon in Australia, but some areas have had outbreaks.
Things to know:
🔸there have been no outbreaks in Victoria to date
🔸 the high-risk areas are:
1. Any location in the Northern Territory
2. The Kimberley, Goldfields and Pilbara regions in Western Australia
3. The far northwest of South Australia
🔸 if you've had the vaccine containing whooping cough (Adacel or Boostrix - the one you get when someone is having a baby), this contains diphtheria, so you are covered for 10 years after this vaccine
🔸 if you are travelling to a high risk area, you are eligible for a government-funded Boostrix vaccine
Please see your GP if you have any concerns or queries about diphtheria or the vaccine.

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection. It most often spreads through respiratory droplets, or direct contact with the wound. Getting vaccinated is the best protection. We monitor and report on national case numbers and trends. We provide guidelines to minimise the risk.
