🚙 THINGS WE SEE EVERY WEEK — Where did the payload go?

It’s something we see regularly.

A vehicle starts out with a certain amount of available payload — then, over time, we start adding the things that make it better suited to touring.

Bullbar.
Winch.
Canopy.
Drawers.
Fridge.
Battery system.
Recovery gear.

Then add passengers, luggage and everything else you take away.

And once the caravan is hitched, the tow ball load also adds to the load carried by the vehicle.

Individually, each addition might not seem like much.

But together they can use a significant amount of your available payload — sometimes before you’ve even bought the caravan.

That’s why, when you’re looking at your next caravan, don’t just ask:

“How much can my vehicle tow?”

Also ask:

“How much capacity does my vehicle actually have left for the way we travel?”

3,500kg towing capacity.
Perfect. Job done… right? 😄

Well, not quite.

That towing capacity is important, but it’s only one number in the bigger picture.

Before choosing a caravan, you also need to understand how things like your GVM, GCM, axle limits, available payload and tow ball download all work together.

And then there’s what you actually put in the vehicle:

Passengers.
Fuel.
Bullbar.
Winch.
Drawers.
Fridge.
Camping gear.

They all use some of the vehicle’s available capacity.

So Ol’ Mate isn’t wrong about the 3,500kg figure — he just hasn’t finished reading yet. 😉

😎 OL’ MATE EXPLAINS… It’s a complicated relationship!

If caravan weights have ever left you thinking “Why don’t these numbers just add up?” — you’re definitely not alone.

It would be nice if it worked something like:

Front axle limit + rear axle limit = GVM
GVM + ATM = GCM
Towing capacity = the caravan I can tow

Nice and simple.

Except… it doesn’t work like that. 😄

GVM, GCM, ATM, payload, axle limits, towing capacity and tow ball download are different limits and measurements. They relate to different parts of your vehicle, caravan and combination — and they can also affect one another.

That means being within one limit doesn’t automatically tell you that everything else is within its applicable limit too.

The important bit isn’t memorising a giant formula.

It’s understanding that your setup needs to be looked at as a complete combination — vehicle, caravan, axles, payload, tow ball download and the gear you’re actually carrying.

A vehicle with a 3,500kg towing capacity doesn’t automatically mean every caravan weighing up to 3,500kg will be suitable for that vehicle.

That towing figure is important — but it’s only one part of the picture.

When matching a vehicle and caravan, you also need to consider things like:

• GVM
• GCM
• Front and rear axle limits
• Available payload
• Maximum tow ball download

And remember, your vehicle still needs to carry passengers, fuel, accessories and gear before you even consider the load being transferred from the caravan.

Everything you’ve been looking for.

Your vehicle still has to carry you, your passengers, fuel, accessories and gear, as well as the load the caravan places on the vehicle.

So when you’re shopping for your next caravan, start with the vehicle you already have.

Know what it can realistically carry and tow when it’s loaded for travel — then find the van that works with it.

It might not sound quite as exciting as choosing the ensuite or deciding whether you need an outdoor kitchen…
