Happy World Clinical Exercise Physiology Day 🤩

When I first graduated we were still such a small profession, but in recent years we are really growing in numbers, and showing people how beneficial exercise based intervention is for health conditions and disabilities.

It is still such a slog to be recognised equally with other allied health professions, however I know it will all be worth it for future Exercise Physiologists coming into this profession!

Paediatric Exercise Physiology is such a niche area, and one that should not be overlooked. If you don’t know who we are, what we do, how we can help assist your child, etc, please ask! We are all so passionate about what we do and advocating for our profession 💪🏼

Paediatric Exercise Physiologist’s work with children of all ages, including early intervention, for children with movement difficulties, gross motor delays and any childhood condition impacting their gross motor function 👶🏼👧🏻🧒🏼

✨ Rolling ✨

Here is a technique you can do at home with your little one to help assist them with their rolling. Brooks is loving rolling back to tummy, however still needing a bit of encouragement to roll tummy to back!

Brooks is just over 4.5 months old, however this technique applies to all children that haven’t reached this milestone due to developmental delay, disability, etc.

✨ Rolling ✨

To be able to successfully roll from tummy to back, your child will need to master the following skills:

1. Tucking their arms, so they can weight-bear through their forearms

2. Transfer from side to side, and be able to reach out e.g. for a toy

3. Push themselves away from the floor, extending their arms

4. Track a toy, to help with rotation

Some babies and children learning this skill don’t always like tummy time, and can become frustration. A good trick is to practice these skills on a wedge to build strength u til they can tolerate these skills for longer on the floor ☺️

Brooks is 4.5 months old, however this video does not only apply to babies. If your child has a disability or developmental delay, and you have any questions, please reach out 😊

💜International Epilepsy Day💜

Epilepsy is a brain condition that causes recurring seizures. There are many types of epilepsy, and seizure symptoms can vary.

“Seizures may not always be recognised in children when they first occur, depending on the seizure type. People often think of seizures as convulsive, but some seizures can be subtle and very brief, such as an ‘absence seizure’, in which the child has brief episodes of loss of awareness and responsiveness. These can be mistaken as daydreaming. When epileptic seizures often don’t look the way people expect them to, this can sometimes complicate diagnosis” - Better Health

What do you do if you or someone else has noticed your child is walking differently to others? 🤔

Step ☝🏼- consult with an allied health professional that specialises in gross motor function, for example, an Exercise Physiologist!

Step ✌🏼- learn/understand why your child’s gait may be abnormal + receive treatment.

A few things that may be abnormal in your child’s gait:
- Are their knees knocking when they walk?
- Do their feet turn in or out?
- Do their ankles roll in or out?
- Are they walking on their toes?
- Are they walking very heavy with flat feet?
- Does their left and right side look different?

If you are unsure if your child may need help with their gait, please reach out!

✨ Rolling ✨

Here is an at home technique you can do at home with your little one to help assist them with their rolling. Brooks started to attempt this himself, and was getting a little bit stuck, so we have been working on his rolling ever since!

Brooks is just over 3 months, however this technique applies to all children that haven’t reached this milestone due to developmental delay, disability, etc.

Introducing my little Nephew, Brooks, who decided to start rolling over a week ago 🥰

I thought I’d take this milestone attempt as a way to talk about rolling. Brooks is just over 3 months old, however this applies to all little ones that haven’t reached this milestone due to developmental delay, disability, etc.

If you have any questions, please reach out!

Ps… I’m obsessed with this little man 😍
