More than halfway through the month now, and the frost recently has been the kind that makes the whole world hold its breath — white across the paddocks, mist sitting so low the fence posts looked like they were floating. ❄️

I spent the morning with a horse who's been in her new home since late summer. She's come a long way.

Trusts the routine. Knows the gate. But one thing's stayed: she won't close the gap.

Walks up, stops two metres short, and waits — always assessing, always negotiating with some old story about getting too close.

Today I didn't ask her to finish the distance.

I stood in the frost with my hands open and my breathing slow, not needing anything from her except exactly what she was offering.

And about half an hour in, without ceremony, she walked right up. Rested her nose against my shoulder.

Stayed there long enough for the frost to start melting off her whiskers.

Here's what I want to say on this Monday — not just about horses, but about nervous systems generally (yours included).

The gap doesn't close because you convinced anyone. It closes when the body stops needing to negotiate.

When enough unhurried moments have stacked up that staying alert just stops making sense.

So if you're starting the week chasing a breakthrough — with your rescue animal, your training goal, your own internal restlessness — this is your permission to stop chasing.

Just be one more unhurried presence in the room.

That's the thing that actually moves the needle. Your animal already knows it. Now your Monday does too. 🌿

Saturday afternoon, Wendouree. The kind of light that doesn't ask anything. 🌤️

I was out with a horse this morning who taught me something I didn't know I'd forgotten.

She's a mare who has been through the system — rehomed twice, seen enough human versions of kindness to be cautious about all of them.

Today she walked to me across wet grass, stopped a metre short, and just... stood. Not asking. Not leaving. Just present.

And I realised — that's the whole thing. She wasn't evaluating me anymore. She was just being with me.

That's the quiet threshold animals cross when the nervous system finally decides the room is safe. No fanfare.

No announcement. Just a held breath let go.

Saturday can hold that for you too — not another thing to fix, not another outcome to chase.

Just permission to be exactly where you are, with open hands, and let the week finish falling away. 🍂

The rain was coming down in sheets across Ballarat this morning — the kind of cold, driving rain that soaks everything in minutes and sends most of us straight back to the kettle. ☔

Days like this, the undercover area becomes a sanctuary.

The sound of rain on the roof, the paddock turning to puddles beyond the drip line, and a horse choosing to stand with me — not because they're tied, not because they've been asked, but because this dry quiet pocket feels safer than anywhere else right now.

Here's what I notice in sessions on rainy days: animals carry weather tension the same way we do.

Stiffness in the neck from bracing against the cold.

Shallow breathing from the constant low-grade startle of a sudden gust.

A general sense of waiting for the next uncomfortable thing.

When I offer Reiki in this space, I'm not asking for performance or perfect ground manners.

I'm just holding a frequency of deep calm and inviting their nervous system to notice: you're under cover now, you're dry, you're safe to let go.

The transformation always starts the same way — a long exhale, a jaw unclenching, a hind leg cocking into rest.

The animal finally registers that the rain is outside, and where they're standing right now is still. 🌿

It's the same for us, honestly.

Find your patch of dry ground.

Borrow the calm that's already in the room.

You don't have to create it from scratch today.

The frost in Mount Rowan this morning was the kind that makes every sound travel further — the sun gently rising, melting the frost.

A magpie's melodic song, a clear call from three paddocks over, the creak of a gate hinge, your own breath hanging in the air like it's not ready to leave you just yet. ❄️

I spent the morning with a horse who's taught me something over the past six months: that some animals don't arrive into safety all at once.

They arrive in instalments.

First the body. Then the routine.

Then, slowly, eventually, the trusting — but only on their own terms and only when nobody's watching for it.

Today she walked over before I'd even unlatched the gate.

Rested her nose against my shoulder without ceremony.

Stood there long enough for the frost to start melting off her whiskers, breathing slow, eyes half-closed.

And I thought — this is the thing you can't schedule.

This is what happens when enough unhurried moments stack up and the body finally stops negotiating.

I think midweek is where we lose track of that the most. Wednesday asks us to be productive, to measure things, to see whether the effort is paying off.

But healing — the real kind, the nervous-system kind — doesn't keep Wednesday hours.

It happens in the gaps between milestones.

In the moment the ear almost flicked and then didn't. In the sigh that caught and then kept going.

So if you're at the halfway point of the week and wondering whether any of the gentle, consistent work you're doing is actually landing — with your horse, your rescue dog, your own internal restlessness — this is your answer from a frosty paddock in Ballarat: it is. It's just not loud about it.

The body has been paying attention this whole time.

One day it'll walk right up to you. No drama.

No announcement.

Just presence, finally ready to rest. 🌿

Did you know? Just like humans, horses communicate a lot through their facial expressions.

Research has shown that horses display different facial cues depending on how they are feeling.

A relaxed horse may have soft eyes, relaxed nostrils, and ears gently forward, while a horse experiencing stress, fear, frustration, or discomfort may show tension around the eyes and mouth, widened eyes, or pinned ears.

Understanding these subtle changes helps us recognise how a horse is feeling, improve welfare and handling practices, build stronger human-animal relationships and enhance safety for both horses and people

Learning to read equine body language and facial expressions is an important part of ensuring positive experiences for everyone involved.

Every face tells a story—are we paying attention?
