Trigger warning: su***de

September is su***de prevention month, and today I wanted to share a personal story about something that really helped me in a dark moment.

Hope is such an important guide through the dark forest. Sometimes, knowing that things will improve, that this deep, heavy pain isnt going to be there forever, is the thing that helps you hold on.

Coming to terms with an acquired disability can be challenging. There are often big emotions present, such as anger, confusion, grief and frustration.

Acquired disability is something many of us will encounter during our lifetime, whether thats as a result of an illness or injury, or simply just a part of getting older.

Talking to a counsellor can be really helpful in supporting you to work through your emotions, find a sense of confidence and self compassion and find creative ways to move through this challenging time.

Our brains are great at taking shortcuts to save time and energy. Sometimes, these shortcuts can cause anxiety and avoidance.

One example is when we make a prediction about what we think will happen in a situation, relationship or encounter and then we behave as though the prediction is true.

It can be difficult at times to tell the difference between a prediction and fact, especially when you feel anxious or fearful.

With practice, you can learn to separate our predictions from the truth, and begin to find new patterns of behaviour that arent based on fear and avoidance.

Dolly Parton was a legend and an icon.

Not only because of her creative work, or her philanthropic efforts (both of which were tremendous) but also because of the genuine, authentic hope and joy she brought to the world.

Its a phenomenal thing, to see someone who is so authentic and joyful in their own existence, who seeks to foster that in others.

Dolly truly did make the world a better place. And somehow remained so humble and humorous whilst doing so.

Her passing is a great loss. But perhaps you might like to reflect on what you admired in her, and whether there is a way to bring that quality forward in your own world, today and always.

On the weekend, I participated in an event called Unwoman, which focused on telling stories around pregnancy, motherhood, choices, loss, and fertility.

There was a strong theme of loss and grief, and the lack of support thats present when that loss occurs. There was also a lot of talk around secrecy and shame.

Pregnancy loss, whether chosen or not, is still a loss worthy of grieving. And you deserve to be held and supported through that loss.

I can provide safe, confidential support as you process your emotions and move through the loss.

Motivation has been a theme of my counselling sessions lately. Lack of motivation, lethargy and procrastination often go hand-in-hand with anxiety, stress and grief.

I like to take a shame-free approach to working with motivation, to identify barriers and the internal processes that are getting in the way, make tasks simpler or more achievable and connect with an attitude of acceptance rather than resistance.

Do you feel the need to apologise when you express a strong emotion?

It strikes me as fascinating when a client says "sorry" for crying or having an emotional outburst in session.

Our time together is yours. You can feel encouraged to express yourself authentically without being judged or suppressed.

Feeling anxious in your relationship? It might be time to take a break from scrolling.

One of the kindest, most supportive things you can do for a loved one who has lost someone important to them is to share your memories of that person.

Youre not going to remind them that they've died. They already know, and its all they're thinking about.

Youre not going to upset them by mentioning their name or sharing a photo. They're already heartbroken.

What you will do is allow them an opportunity to connect deeply, to feel less alone in an experience that is often deeply lonely. To feel the presence of their lost loved one, and to let them live briefly through the sharing.

Holding back doesnt protect them from pain, it isolates them in their grief.

Sharing gives an outlet and connection, both things that are desperately needed when youre deep in grief.

Death is something we all have in common – yet it's often the conversation we avoid. Dying to Know Month each August is about making space for these important conversations.

β˜• Join us for our first FREE community Death Cafe on Wednesday 5 August from 10.00am-11.00am at one of our favourite Ballarat cafes, and be part of an open, respectful conversation about death, dying and life.

𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐄, 𝐁𝐔𝐓 ππŽπŽπŠπˆππ†π’ π„π’π’π„ππ“πˆπ€π‹: To reserve your place, please email [email protected]. Venue details and a Death Cafe FAQ sheet will be included with your booking confirmation email. Places are limited, so don’t delay – book today!

A Death Cafe isn't a seminar, counselling session or support group. There's no agenda, no presentations and no expected outcomes – just people coming together over tea, coffee and snacks to share thoughts, questions and experiences in a welcoming, confidential setting.

Whether you're simply curious, have experienced loss, or have been thinking about these conversations for some time, you're warmly invited to attend. Listening is just as welcome as sharing.

Hosted by Ballarat Cemeteries, this free community event offers a rare opportunity to connect with others and explore a topic that touches every one of us. Come along for the conversation. Stay for the connection - and the delicious scones!

Can't make it on this date? Stay tuned for news of our next three Death Cafe events.
