Our aged care workforce is a vital part of the Grampians Health community, and on Aged Care Employee Day last Friday (7 August) we took the opportunity to celebrate and thank these incredible people for their dedication, care and compassion.

A number of morning and afternoon teas were held across our sites, including the annual ‘reverse cafés’ in Ballarat, with aged care community residents reversing the roles and tending to staff with an offering of tea, coffee and sweet treats.

Not just on Aged Care Employee Day, but every day, we acknowledge the enormous difference our aged care workforce makes to the lives of those we are privileged to care for. Thank you for all that you do.

The next time you visit our Volunteer Gift Shop, remember that your purchase is part of something bigger. 💙

Because our shop is volunteer run, all profits are returned to the hospital and directed toward projects that are needed most. This means every card, balloon, bunch of flowers, and soft toy purchase helps support improvements that benefit patients, families, and staff.

By choosing to shop with us, you're helping create a better healthcare experience for everyone in our community.

📍 Ballarat Base Hospital, Drummond St entrance, next to the cafe
🕙 Open Monday to Friday, 10:00AM - 2:00PM (cafe staff can assist outside of these times)

If you haven’t stopped by in a while, consider this your sign to pop in and say hello to the volunteers and support the shop that gives back to your hospital community.

Last month, East Point FNC came together for its inaugural Wellness Round in support of our Cancer Wellness Centre, raising an incredible $4,169.16.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all players, club members and community supporters for getting behind the Wellness Round. From purchasing our All Codes All Cancers socks to making a donation or attending the Ladies Day Paint & Sip, hosted by talented local artist Monica Hardy, your generosity helped make the round an outstanding success.

Community fundraising efforts like this ensure our Cancer Wellness Centre can continue to provide a welcoming, supportive environment for local people and families impacted by cancer. The funds raised will help us deliver our free wellness programs and services, which focus on improving wellbeing, reducing isolation and supporting individuals throughout their cancer journey.

We’re incredibly grateful to East Point for choosing to support our Wellness Centre.

Go Roos ❤️🤍💙

Did you know that regional Australians are 17% more likely to suffer a stroke than those in metropolitan areas?

This National Stroke Week we want you to know that you don’t need a cape to be a hero 🦹‍♀️– you just need to know how to recognise the signs of stroke. Knowing the F.A.S.T. (Face, Arms, Speech and Time) signs means you can act quickly when every second counts.

The F.A.S.T. test is simple:
🙍‍♀️FACE: Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
💪 ARMS: Can they lift both arms?
👄SPEECH: Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
⏱️ TIME IS CRITICAL: If you see any of these signs call 000 (triple zero) immediately.

Last week we made a huge announcement. We launched the Care Closer to Home appeal! 💜

"This campaign is about much more than bricks and mortar.

It is about people. It is about a farmer from Horsham, a young parent from Ararat, a retiree from Stawell, a family from Maryborough, or a patient from Ballarat being able to access world-class care closer to home.

When we talk about a Clinical Research Centre, we are talking about hope.

We are talking about giving more people access to leading-edge treatments and clinical trials without the financial, physical and emotional burden of travelling long distances.

Research changes lives.

Every major advance in medicine begins with research, innovation and the willingness to invest in a better future. By expanding research capability in our region, we give more people the opportunity to access emerging treatments and benefit from the latest advances in healthcare without leaving their communities."

- Cora Trevarthen, Acting Grampians Health Board Chair and Volunteer Philanthropic Campaign committee member.

Together, we can bring life-changing care closer to home through clinical trials.

With only days until Respect Round clubs across the Central Highlands Football Netball League are preparing their orange uniforms, game balls and arm bands to help stamp out gendered violence.

Delivered by Grampians Health’s Ballarat Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA), the special round will focus on gaining a commitment from sporting communities to be upstanders and create a culture of respect.

We encourage everyone to head to one of the Respect Round games across the Central Highlands region on Saturday 8 August, with games being hosted at Springbank, Skipton, Rokewood Corindhap, Newlyn, Dunnstown, Daylesford, Waubra and Hepburn.

Grampians Health, and our Ballarat Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA), is getting behind the Respect Ballarat to stamp out gendered violence.

We’re encouraging meaningful conversations, starting at local grassroots sport. These conversations were the focus of the recent Culture of Respect Senior Panel Event, which brought together football and netball leaders from across the Central Highlands region – who heard from leaders is both sport and violence prevention.

Between this event, and the previous Junior Panel event, almost 400 members, representing every club in the Central Highlands Football and Netball League (CHFNL), took positive steps towards creating a Culture of Respect – each given the opportunity to make their own commitment to help make sport safe, inclusive and welcoming for everyone.

Learn more at https://my.gh.org.au/4fODZQy

Respect Round will be held across the CHFNL on Saturday 8 August 2026.

Ballarat ED is experiencing very high demand and long wait times. Please consider alternate options if your condition is not life threatening.

If you need urgent care, do you know where to go?

In Ballarat, UFS runs a free medical urgent care clinic, equipped to provide urgent care, open 9am to 11pm every day.

There is a difference between urgent and emergency care.

Urgent care means you need immediate care, but your condition is not life-threatening.

If you are not sure if your condition is life-threatening, or if you are experiencing chest pain, call Triple Zero 000 / go directly to the nearest Emergency Department.

Did you know that in Australia, your family is always asked to agree to donation?

Registration is important, but so is telling your family. Most families agree to donation when they know you want to be a donor.

This DonateLife Week, start a conversation about organ and tissue donation.

And don’t forget to take a minute to register as an organ and tissue donor at https://www.donatelife.gov.au/
