🦶 Achilles pain? Rest isn’t always the answer.

Whether it’s discomfort on your morning walk, pain when running or stiffness after exercise, Achilles tendon pain can make staying active difficult.

While reducing activity may help settle symptoms initially, getting back to the things you enjoy often requires more than rest alone.

💪 The key is progressive loading.

Achilles rehabilitation may involve:

✔️ Starting with exercises your tendon can comfortably tolerate
✔️ Gradually building calf strength and tendon capacity
✔️ Progressing towards more challenging movements
✔️ Preparing your tendon for the demands of walking, running or sport

There’s no single exercise program that works for everyone. The right starting point and progression depend on your symptoms, capacity and goals.

🎥 Watch Roisin Duffy, Physiotherapist at RedoHealth, demonstrate how Achilles rehabilitation can progress over time.

🦵 Why does tendon pain keep coming back?

You rest it. It feels better. You get back to your usual activities… and the pain returns.

Sound familiar?

Tendon pain can be frustrating, particularly when it seems to settle with rest but flares up again as soon as you become more active.

💡 Here’s the thing: Rest can help reduce symptoms, but it doesn’t necessarily rebuild your tendon’s ability to tolerate load.

That’s where progressive rehabilitation comes in.

At RedoHealth, we look at what’s contributing to your symptoms, assess your current capacity and gradually introduce exercises that help you build strength and confidence in movement.

The goal isn’t just to settle the pain — it’s to help you get back to doing the things you love.

🎥 In this video, our physiotherapist Roisin Duffy explains why tendon pain can persist and how rehabilitation can help.

🦵 Tendon pain that just won’t settle?

Achilles pain, tennis elbow, persistent knee pain or that frustrating heel pain when you first get out of bed?

Tendon pain can be stubborn, and simply resting isn’t always the answer.

In our latest blog, Roisin Duffy, APA Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist at RedoHealth, explains what tendinopathy is, why tendon pain can persist, and how the right rehabilitation approach can help.

💡 The key message?

Rest may help settle symptoms, but long-term recovery often involves gradually rebuilding the tendon’s strength and capacity to tolerate activity.

It’s not just about reducing pain — it’s about getting you back to doing the things you love.

Throughout October, Roisin will be sharing practical insights into:

🦶 Achilles tendinopathy
💪 Tennis elbow
👣 Plantar fascia and morning heel pain
🏃 Returning to running and sport

Whether you’re dealing with ongoing tendon pain or looking to return to exercise with confidence, understanding how tendons respond to load is an important first step.

Did you know that the right type of exercise can help support stronger bones? 💪

Impact exercise can provide an important stimulus for bone health and may form part of an exercise program for people with osteopenia.

Here are three examples of impact exercises that can be progressed depending on your individual ability:

👣 Stomping step-ups – adding purposeful impact and load through the legs.

⬇️ Depth drops – progressing impact and landing control.

⚡ Low-level pogos – introducing repeated, dynamic loading.

The right starting point is different for everyone. Your bone density, fracture history, strength, balance and previous exercise experience all influence which exercises – and how much impact – are appropriate for you.

If you have osteoporosis or osteopenia and aren’t sure where to start, an Exercise Physiologist or physiotherapist can help develop an appropriate program.

🦴 What type of exercise actually helps build stronger bones?

When it comes to osteoporosis and osteopenia, simply being active is important — but the type of exercise you do matters too.

A well-designed exercise program for bone health may include:

💪 Strength training to progressively challenge your muscles and bones

🏃 Weight-bearing and impact exercise to provide the stimulus bones need to adapt

⚖️ Balance training to improve stability and help reduce the risk of falls

The important part is finding the right level for you — particularly if you’ve been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia or you’re unsure about which exercises are appropriate.

Strength training is one of the most important tools we have for supporting bone health. 💪

For people with osteopenia or osteoporosis, appropriately prescribed resistance exercise can help support bone health while improving muscle strength, balance and overall physical function.

Here are three exercises that may form part of a bone-strengthening program:

🏋️ Deadlift – loads the legs, hips and trunk while developing strength for lifting.

🪑 Squat – develops lower-body strength important for everyday activities such as getting out of a chair and climbing stairs.

💪 Overhead press – builds upper-body strength while providing loading through the arms and shoulders.

The important part isn’t simply doing these exercises – it’s finding the appropriate load and progressing it over time.

Exercise for osteoporosis should be individualised, particularly if you have a history of fragility fracture or other health considerations.

Something hurts when you exercise. Do you need to stop? 🤔

Not necessarily.

Pain during running or exercise doesn’t automatically mean you need to stop all activity.

Sometimes the better approach is to modify what you’re doing – whether that’s the distance, intensity, frequency or type of exercise – while you work out why the problem has developed.

The important thing is how your symptoms respond and whether they’re improving, staying the same or progressively getting worse.

If pain keeps returning, is changing the way you move or is stopping you doing the activities you enjoy, that’s a good time to have it properly assessed.

Physiotherapist Lawrence McGrath explains more in this video.
