Movement with purpose!

The glider swing is so much more than just fun! The gentle, rhythmic movement stimulates the vestibular system—the part of our inner ear and brain responsible for balance, movement, and knowing where our body is in space. According to sensory integration principles, Kim Barthel’s work, and the Polyvagal Theory, this type of movement helps calm the nervous system, improve focus, support emotional regulation, and helps children feel safe, organised, and connected to their bodies.

While swinging, Amy is also working on:
✨ Crossing the midline
✨ Core strength & postural control
✨ Hand strength & fine motor skills
✨ Bilateral coordination
✨ Motor planning & timing

Play is powerful—it builds the foundations for learning, confidence, and everyday independence. 💙

🙃 Why do so many children love being upside down?

It might just look like fun, but there’s a lot more happening.
According to occupational therapist Kim Barthel, movement experiences like hanging upside down provide rich vestibular input (movement and balance information from the inner ear), helping children better understand where their body is in space and supporting nervous system regulation.

From a Polyvagal Theory perspective (Dr Stephen Porges), these playful movement experiences may:
✨ Stimulate the vagus nerve, supporting regulation of the autonomic nervous system.
✨ Help some children shift into a calmer, more regulated state when offered in a safe, playful relationship.
✨ Promote feelings of safety and support the ventral vagal state, where children are more available for learning, play and connection.
✨ Support healthy regulation of heart rate and blood pressure as the body adapts to changes in position.
✨ Help children organise their sensory system, improve body awareness and support emotional regulation.
Many children instinctively seek out movement that helps their nervous system feel “just right.” That’s why activities like hanging upside down are often much more than play—they’re meaningful sensory experiences that can support regulation, attention and participation.

Every child is unique, and vestibular activities should always be tailored to the child’s individual needs and completed safely under appropriate supervision.

What a teacher sees 👀 vs. what an OT sees 🧠✨
To many people, this just looks like balancing on a Bosu ball and throwing bean bags...
But to an Occupational Therapist, this one activity is targeting so much more than fun! 💙
Parents and teachers might notice:
📝 Difficulty sitting still
📝 Messy handwriting
📝 Trouble completing work
📝 Difficulty staying organised
As OTs, we ask why? 🤔
During this activity we’re building:
⭐ Vestibular processing (balance & movement)
⭐ Proprioceptive processing (body awareness)
⭐ Core strength & postural stability
⭐ Bilateral coordination
⭐ Motor planning & sequencing
⭐ Visual tracking & hand-eye coordination
⭐ Attention, focus & impulse control
When we strengthen the foundations, the everyday skills begin to improve. Better sitting, better handwriting, better attention, better participation. 🌱
It’s never just “playing”—it’s purposeful therapy disguised as fun! 🎯💪

A big congratulations to Alyssa for taking out today’s Acrobat Swing Challenge! 👏

The Acrobat Swing (our colourful Lycra layered swing) might look like pure fun, but it provides a full-body sensory and motor challenge that even our OTs love putting to the test!
Why do we use it in therapy? 🤔

💪 Encourages motor planning as children work out how to climb, balance, and move within the swing.
💪 Provides proprioceptive input (“heavy work”) through pushing, pulling, climbing, and maintaining body positions, helping with regulation and body awareness.
🧠 Develops body awareness by teaching children where their body is in space without relying solely on vision.
🤲 Strengthens bilateral coordination as both sides of the body work together during climbing, holding, and shifting weight.
⚖️ Challenges balance, core strength, postural control, gravitational insecurity, and coordination while navigating an ever-changing surface.
🎯 Builds problem-solving, confidence, and persistence as children discover new ways to move and overcome challenges.

At our clinic, we believe the best therapy happens when children are having fun—and sometimes that means our therapists have to join in too! 😄

Today in the clinic, we celebrated Kim’s birthday a little later than planned after she recently celebrated overseas.

Kim and Irena had already shared a birthday celebration at a previous Family Connections OT event—Allison’s wedding—making this another special moment to celebrate together.

It was a lovely day filled with laughter, love, and wonderful memories. Wishing Kim another very happy birthday! 🎉🎂💜

Our lovely OT Alyssa demonstrating one of our favourite movement-based activities using the frog swing! 🐸✨
This activity involves jumping from the frog swing, reaching to grab rings, and accurately placing them onto a pole. While it involves play, it is packed with opportunities to develop foundational skills for everyday activities.
🌟 Bilateral Coordination – using both sides of the body together to stabilise, reach, grasp and place the rings.
🌟 Motor Planning – planning, sequencing and executing the movements needed to jump, reach, land and complete the task successfully.
🌟 Proprioceptive Processing – receiving powerful feedback through the muscles and joints during jumping, pushing and landing, which supports body awareness and regulation.
🌟 Extensor Muscle Activation – strengthening the muscles of the back, shoulders, hips and legs that help us maintain upright posture and endurance for tasks such as sitting at a desk.
🌟 Visual Tracking & Spatial Awareness – visually locating the rings, judging distances, and understanding where the body is in relation to the environment.
🌟 Neck Control – maintaining head position and visual focus while moving through space, an important skill for balance, coordination and visual development.

Activities like these help build the strong foundations needed for participation in playground activities, sports, classroom learning, handwriting and everyday functional tasks—all while having fun! 💙
