Did you know chronic pain affects more women than men? Yet, women are more likely to have that pain dismissed or downplayed by their doctor.

This National Pain Week, we’re shining light on chronic pain and how to manage it.

Most of us experience pain from time to time, but chronic pain is one that does not go away. It lasts beyond the expected time for healing after an injury or surgery, and can exist without any clear reason.

Although medications can be prescribed for chronic pain, research shows that they do not effectively manage the condition long-term. This is why it’s important to develop some self-management strategies for chronic pain.

Painaustralia recommends the following strategies to manage chronic pain:
✔️ Pace your activities — plan intentional rest and stretch breaks throughout the day to avoid flare ups
✔️ Engage in gentle movement daily — moderate physical activity will keep your muscles conditioned and help improve your pain levels
✔️ Focus on something you enjoy — distractions, such as engaging in your hobbies, can shift away focus from the pain
✔️ Practice mindfulness — learning how to accept all your thoughts and feelings can help reduce the physical emotional toll tied to pain
✔️ Make time for relaxation daily — practicing simple deep-breathing techniques, or joining a gentle yoga class, can release muscle tension and reduce pain intensity
✔️ Prioritise a good night’s sleep — developing good sleep hygiene, such as establishing a regular bedtime routine, can contribute to better sleep and pain management
✔️ Seek support when needed — managing chronic pain can be an isolating experience and it may be beneficial to join a support group or online community
✔️ Be kind to yourself — living with chronic pain takes strength and progress is not always linear; try to meet yourself with the same patience and compassion you would offer others

Finding the back-to-school-rush overwhelming? Feeling stressed about getting the kids back into routine?

Welcome back to Mindful Minute: our video series where our Child & Adolescent Trauma Counsellor, Justine, shares practical tools and techniques to help slow us down, reconnect, and feel more grounded in the present moment.

In today’s episode, Justine guides us through a simple slow breathing exercise that can help calm and regulate our nervous system, allowing us to respond to stressful situations more effectively.

Take a moment to breathe along with Justine:
✔️ Breathe in for 4 counts
✔️ Hold for 2 counts
✔️ Breathe out for 6 counts

Repeat this cycle a few times whenever you need a moment to slow down and reset.

Follow along to discover more stress management strategies in Justine’s wellbeing toolkit!

In our work, we spend much of our time responding to, advocating for, and supporting women as they navigate some of the most challenging times in their lives. But we don’t often get to see what life looks like on the other side.

So when a former client takes the time to write to us and share where she is now, it becomes a moment of reflection. A reminder of why this work matters. Not because we have all the answers, but because sometimes the most important thing we can do is offer women a space where they feel heard, believed, and supported.

This testimonial is shared with permission, and we are very grateful to hear that our client and her children are now safe, settled, and thriving. We are honoured to have been part of her journey towards safety and stability, and it comes as a reminder that moments which may seem small to us — a conversation, a listening ear, a kind word — can stay with someone long after they leave our centre.

To every woman who has walked through our doors: thank you for trusting us with your story.

And to our team: this is a gentle reminder that the care, compassion, and support you provide everyday makes a meaningful difference.
