Does your child 🧒 wake up with a sudden scream looking very scared and you cannot console them
Do you find your child in bed thrashing their arms and legs wildly, or get up and start running around the house😳

If you answered Yes to the above statements, then your child is probably experiencing Night Terrors.
😱Night terrors are very dramatic awakenings that happen during the first few hours of sleep at night. A child who is having a night terror is stuck halfway between being asleep and awake. They are awake enough to get out of bed, talk or scream and have their eyes open; but they are asleep in that they do not respond to a parent trying to console them. It can be very distressing to watch, as your child may seem extremely disturbed and upset. They usually don't remember the episode in the morning.😲

Night terrors are not the same as nightmares. Nightmares are scary dreams that usually happen in the second half of the night, during dream sleep.🛌 During a nightmare, your child wakes up fully and can instantly remember the frightening dream. You can settle your child when they have had a nightmare, and your child will usually remember the waking in the morning.

Facts about Night Terrors:🤔
About 5% of children have night terrors; they usually happen in preschool- and primary school-aged children.
Night terrors will not have any long-term effects on your child, and they will most likely grow out of them.
Night terrors happen in healthy children, and are a part of normal development.
Overtiredness and not enough sleep can make night terrors more frequent.

Strategies to handle Night Terrors:🤓
During the night terror episode, stay calm and don't touch your child unless they are going to hurt themselves.
Efforts to settle or help your child often make the episode worse.
Keep your house safe at night time. Lock windows and doors, and clear the bedroom floor of objects so they don't step on things or trip over.
Have a regular sleep time with a good bedtime routine to avoid your child becoming too tired.
Don't make a big fuss about the night terror the next day as you may cause your child and their siblings to become anxious about going to bed.

Why Flat Feet In Children Should NOT Be Ignored

Flat feet in children are not always "just cosmetic."
💡 An overpronated midfoot can affect the entire body:
⚠️ Foot bone deformity ⚠️ Out-toeing ⚠️ Early bunion formation ⚠️ Knock knees ⚠️ Pelvic and spinal posture changes ⚠️ Low back pain

This is why proper correction matters.
At Sydney Kids Physio, we focus on correcting the midfoot with firm orthotics that properly support alignment — not soft inserts that partially collapse under body weight.
Because better foot alignment can improve the mechanics of the knees, hips, pelvis, and spine.
And in our experience? Children usually adapt to orthotics much quicker than expected when they understand WHY they matter.

😬Feeling frustrated that your little one with special needs is resisting their physiotherapist's efforts to help them learn to crawl?
🤔Wondering "Will my child with special needs ever crawl?"

If you answered yes to the above questions, you are not alone.
Here at Sydney Kids Physio, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓see many little ones with Special Needs. The goal of Physiotherapy is to help little ones learn to move better to achieve their gross motor skills milestones like rolling, sitting, crawling, pulling to stand, cruising and walking.

Some of the little ones we see in our clinic have complex special needs, and they are nonverbal, so the only way they do communicate is often by screaming and crying.😭 Like all of us, little ones with special needs do find it challenging when they have to learn something new. So not surprisingly, little ones with special needs sometimes protest and scream to resist learning to crawl. However, by using different Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Strategies, Makaton Signing and Gross Motor Relearning Strategies, our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists have been able to help many little ones learn to settle and cooperate to learn to crawl.

To see your little one👶🏻 with Special Needs crawl happily across the room to you is definitely worth the hard work, heartache and stress on your part.

So if you are feeling frustrated and doubting your child's ability to crawl, be reassured, the persistence will be worth it! Little ones with Special Needs do need more time to get stronger and to learn new skills. 💪Our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists have seen it happen many many times over with many many children.

Every child 👶🏻 deserves the chance to be the best that they can be, so if you have been told that your child may never walk….
Don't give up! We don't! 🙅‍♀️

We know that Early Intervention makes a difference; we know that the brain 🧠 is plastic and learning occurs with practice! With the correct intervention and practice, we can help the child's brain 🧠 learn to make new connections and pathways so the child learns new movement patterns to roll, to sit, to crawl and to walk, run, hop, jump and skip! 🏃‍♀️

We can recount stories of children 👧 and families whom we have been privileged to work with, who will tell you of achieving the "impossible". 🚀🚀🚀 It doesn't happen overnight, there is no magic wand, it takes hard work 😓 , Expert advice, persistence and consistent practice, but it is POSSIBLE💪

We have specialists who have been stunned and had to eat their words…… 🤦‍♂️ children whom they predict will never be able to walk, who will need wheelchairs, who will not talk ... Our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists have helped these very same children learn to walk independently without any walking aids.🚶‍♀️

Hope is the most precious thing you can give your child. If you are concerned about your child 🧒 or have been told that "baby's brains are like swiss cheese 🧀 on a brain scan and baby can never learn to walk" , reach out to one of our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists at Sydney Kids Physio on 📱(02) 9790 4233 today or DM us at Sydney Kids Physio to find out how we can help your child achieve their best potential today! 💪🚀🚀

🤔Did you know that children with Level IV and Level V Cerebral Palsy have a 50-90% risk of hip subluxation?
😮Have you been told that your child with cerebral palsy may need hip surgery to prevent hip dislocation?

Hip subluxation is when the femoral head (top of the thigh bone) partially comes out of the acetabulum (hip socket). Over time, if untreated, it can progress to complete dislocation, cause pain, affect mobility, and lead to arthritis or difficulty with caregiving (e.g. hygiene, dressing). The risk of hip subluxation in children with cerebral palsy is significantly higher than in typically developing children due to muscle imbalances, spasticity, and abnormal movement patterns affecting the hip joint.

Guided hip growth surgery is a minimally invasive orthopeadic procedure used in children with cerebral palsy to help gradually correct abnormal hip development as the child grows. This is a minimally invasive orthopedic procedure used in children with CP to gradually improve hip alignment by controlling growth at the hip joint. A small plate and screws are placed on the inner side of the femur to slow growth there, allowing the outer side to catch up.

👧The Guided hip growth surgery is suitable for :
Children with mild to moderate hip subluxation (migration percentage ~30–50%)
Typically ages 4–10, when there is sufficient growth remaining
Often used in GMFCS levels III–V (non-ambulant children with CP)

Advantages of Guided hip growth surgery:
Minimally invasive (small incision, less recovery time)
Avoids or delays major reconstructive surgery
Can be done bilaterally if needed
Low complication rate

Limitations of Guided hip growth surgery:
Only works while the child is still growing
Requires ongoing follow-up and sometimes additional procedures
May not be sufficient alone for severe hip displacement

if you have a child with cerebral palsy, and you are wondering if guided hip growth surgery may be an option for them, reach out to speak to one of our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists 🤓at Sydney Kids Physio on (02)9790 4233 or DM us today!

Did you know that babies can start tummy time and play time right from Day 1🤔

At birth babies, 👶🏻don't have body awareness and don't know that their arms and legs belong to them. It is important to help baby learn that their arms 👐and legs belong to them so that baby learns to move their arm and leg across their body's midline to roll, bring their hands to midline to clap, 👏🏻move their arms and legs alternately to learn to crawl and walk.

A great way to help your baby learn about their arms and legs is to place wrist wraps and rattle socks 🧦on their hands and feet while they are propped on their back with 45 degrees head up. Initially you will have to help baby 👶🏻 by bringing their hands with the wrist wraps towards their midline and in front of them for baby to notice them. All you are encouraging is for baby to look 👀 at the wrist wraps and follow their hands as you move it in front of their line of vision. Same with their feet, bend their hips to show baby their feet with the rattle socks on them to catch baby's attention and have baby follow their feet with their eyes.👀 Eventually baby will learn to wave and kick their arms and feet, 👋 grab the wrist wraps on one hand with the other, bring their hand to their mouths, grab their feet and socks with their hands and put their feet into their mouth. 🤗

The best time to carry out play time is after baby is awake and before they feed. 🍼This is because baby will be working their tummy muscles hard in reaching and kicking their legs and feet, which may cause baby to throw up if they have just had a feed. Start with frequent short 10-15mins ⏱of play time throughout the day and slowly increase play time to 1 hour twice a day. During play time, have baby also lay on their tummy to play and baby will learn to reach and play with their wrist wraps on their arms.

Tummy Time and Play Time should be fun for baby and you.😊 If baby is struggling to tolerate Tummy Time and Play Time, reach out to speak to one of our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapist at Sydney Kids Physio on 📱(02) 9790 4233 or DM us .

3 Top Tips to giving your child 👶🏻 a lifetime of healthy bones

#1. Make sure your child has their daily-recommended intake of calcium. 🥛
Different ages, genders and stages of life require different amounts of calcium. Children 👧are aged between 4-8 years should aim to have 2-3 serves of calcium-rich foods each day to reach a total intake of 700mg/day. Older children (9-11 years) and teens (12-18 years) should aim to have 3 serves of calcium-rich foods each day to reach a total intake of 1000-1300 mg/day. This is their period of rapid bone growth.

#2. Get your child out in the sunshine ☀️while being Sun Safe.
Vitamin D is essential to bone health. In Australia we need to balance the risk of skin cancer from too much sun exposure with maintaining adequate Vitamin D levels.
In winter❄️ – for a moderately fair skinned person the recommendation is 7–30 minutes (depending on the latitude of where you live) at noon. In summer - for the same moderately fair-skinned person, a walk with arms exposed for 5–10 minutes mid morning or mid afternoon in summer is beneficial for Vitamin D production. Exposure to sunlight is recommended at 10am and 2pm in summer (11am or 3pm in daylight saving time). Avoid peak UV periods due to the cancerous effects of sunlight at that time.

#3. Encourage your child to have regular exercise. 🏃‍♀️
When we exercise, our muscles pull on our bones, which in turn build bone. Hence exercise builds stronger, denser bones. As a rule of thumb, 30 minutes of bone building exercise 4-6 times a week can help maintain better bone density. Bones respond better to weight-bearing exercises, including: stair climbing, tennis, netball, jogging, aerobic dance and resistance training.

Concerned that your child may not be getting sufficient exercise or the right types of exercise to build strong bones? Want to help your child with special needs or developmental delay who is not yet standing or walking, to build strong bones? To find out how we can help, ring Sydney Kids Physio 📱on (02) 9790 4233 or DM us to speak to one of our Expert paediatric Physiotherapists today.
