Sometimes, we only see what’s happening on the surface.
A child who isn’t engaging in class may look distracted, unmotivated or disinterested. A child who is falling behind academically may appear like they’re not trying.
But we don’t always know what’s happening underneath.
They may be struggling to process information, understand instructions, read, write, remember what they’ve been taught, manage anxiety, regulate their emotions, cope with sensory demands or simply keep up with the pace of the classroom.
The behaviour we see is often only one small part of the picture.
Before we ask, “Why aren’t they trying?”
Let’s ask, “What might be making this difficult for them?”
Understanding the underlying challenges can be the first step towards giving a child the right support to feel confident, capable and ready to learn.
