Sometimes, we only see what’s happening on the surface.

A child who isn’t engaging in class may look distracted, unmotivated or disinterested. A child who is falling behind academically may appear like they’re not trying.

But we don’t always know what’s happening underneath.

They may be struggling to process information, understand instructions, read, write, remember what they’ve been taught, manage anxiety, regulate their emotions, cope with sensory demands or simply keep up with the pace of the classroom.

The behaviour we see is often only one small part of the picture.

Before we ask, “Why aren’t they trying?”
Let’s ask, “What might be making this difficult for them?”

Understanding the underlying challenges can be the first step towards giving a child the right support to feel confident, capable and ready to learn.

🧡🩵💜✨ Meet Tanya ✨💛💚🩷

Tanya Cosgrave is a Registered Psychologist with almost 20 years of experience supporting children, adolescents, adults, and their families. She holds a Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology and has spent much of her career working within educational and developmental settings.

While Tanya has experience across a range of areas, assessments are truly her jam. 🧩📚

She has a particular interest in psychometric, developmental, behavioural, and neurodevelopmental assessments, including cognitive and academic testing. Tanya is trained in the ADOS, ADI-R, MIGDAS, and numerous other cognitive, achievement, and behavioural assessment tools. With nearly two decades of experience interpreting assessment results, she is passionate about helping families better understand their child's strengths, challenges, and support needs.

Having worked extensively within the education system from preschool through to Year 12, Tanya is a strong advocate for children, young people, and their families, helping ensure they receive the right support at the right time.

When she's not working, you'll find her spending time with her family and her much-loved German Shepherd puppy 🐾🤍

📋 Tanya is currently offering assessment services only. If you'd like to find out more, email [email protected] or call (02) 9060 9775.

We are wired for connection 🧡❤️💙

Feeling seen, heard, and supported by others isn’t just comforting - it plays an important role in protecting our mental health.

This is especially important for teens, who benefit from opportunities to connect with peers rather than withdraw into isolation.

Parents and caregivers can play a key role in facilitating healthy socialising and encouraging connection. Even small moments of connection can reduce stress, lift mood, and build resilience. A simple check-in or invite to connect can go a long way 🤍
