Public health alert: Melioidosis infections confirmed in Central Queensland.

Melioidosis is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection caused by bacteria found in soil and muddy water. Heavy rain and flooding have increased chances of melioidosis infections.

Reduce your risk of melioidosis:
• Avoid walking through floodwater or mud
• If cleaning up after flooding, wear enclosed water-resistant footwear and protective gloves
• Cover any cuts, abrasions or sores with a waterproof dressing
• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially before eating or drinking

Melioidosis is considered high risk if you have diabetes, chronic conditions, or weakened immunity.

Seek medical help if you develop a sudden fever or cough after heavy rain or floodwater exposure, or if a cut becomes dirty, red or sore.
