Male fertility doesn't get talked about enough, and age plays a bigger part in it than we used to think.

In this podcast clip, .alexalexander explains that fertility challenges can involve male factors, female factors, or both.

S***m don't have a use-by date in the same way eggs do. Studies suggest male fertility still declines with age, though, and the change between the late 20s and 50 can be significant.

We opened our doors in Sydney in 1986, and a lot has changed in fertility care since then.

Over 40 years, our scientists have worked on technology that's now part of how we care for embryos every day. The Geri incubator is one example. It lets embryos develop undisturbed while time-lapse cameras record how they're growing, and it's the reason many of our patients can watch their embryos' progress in the Grow app.

The other part of our story is the people. Our nurses, scientists, specialists and counsellors are the people you'll get to know through treatment, from your first consult to your results calls.

It's the same mix of research and care we started with, and it still shapes how we work today.

If treatment elsewhere hasn't gone the way you hoped, or you're unsure about the plan you've been given, it's okay to want another specialist's view.

A second opinion appointment gives you time with one of our fertility specialists to go through your history, past cycles and test results, and talk about what your options could be from here.

Before the appointment, gather copies of your test results and any reports from past cycles. You can request these from your previous clinic. It also helps to write down your questions, so you can cover everything on the day.

During IVF, you may hear your care team talk about an embryo’s ‘grade’. But what does that grade actually tell us?

Dr Ritu Dutta and Genea Chief Scientific Officer Dean Morbeck explain how embryos are assessed in the laboratory, what those grades can and can’t tell us, and how the timing of embryo development, including reaching the blastocyst stage on day 5 or day 6, fits into the picture.

Some people can only try for a baby with the help of an egg donor. If you've ever wondered whether you could donate, our article explains who's eligible and what's involved.

Donors in Australia need to be aged 21 to 34 and in good overall health, and all donors go through medical, genetic and psychological screening first.

Donation is altruistic, so donors aren't paid, though reasonable expenses like medical costs and travel may be covered.

You'll also have counselling before you start, to help you think through what donating means for you, including that donor-conceived people can request your identifying information when they're older.

Genea Fertility Specialist Dr Eashan Tambimuttu explains one of the small but powerful ways technology has changed the IVF experience: the ability to actually see your embryos grow.

The GERI time-lapse incubator lets embryologists monitor development without disturbing the embryo, giving the scientists more information to work with at every stage. And through the Grow app, patients can watch that same journey unfold themselves, checking in on their embryos from home.

For many, it's a reassuring window into a process that usually happens unseen.

Please join us in welcoming Dr Lachlan Baxter to Genea.

Dr Baxter is a FRANZCOG obstetrician and gynaecologist with a Masters in Minimally Invasive Surgery and a particular interest in endometriosis and pelvic pain. He was the first trainee in Western Australian history to obtain credentialing for laparoscopic hysterectomies in his second year of training, and the first gynaecologist in WA to perform day case hysterectomies. He now provides fertility care alongside Genea's experienced team, bringing his surgical expertise to patients who need surgery as part of their fertility journey.

Dr Baxter is consulting in Mandurah and Wembley.

A special full-circle moment for Genea Group Medical Director Emeritus Prof Mark Bowman, Dr Anthony Marren and Dr Warren Chan.

Years ago, Dr Marren and Dr Chan were trainees at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, where Dr Bowman was Head of the Fertility Clinic.

At the recent Genea Annual Clinical Seminar, it was a particularly meaningful reunion for Dr Bowman, with Dr Marren and Dr Chan now also Fertility Specialists at Genea Sydney C*D and Genea Bella Vista.

Different stages of their careers, decades of shared history in fertility care, and together again under the Genea banner.
