The S in FAST stands for Speech. 🧠

Face. Arms. Speech. Time. Sudden slurred words or trouble finding words can be a stroke, and it is a reason to call 000 straight away.

Afterwards, speech pathology helps with the communication changes stroke can leave behind. They are common, they are treatable, and recovery keeps going well past the first few months.

Who’d like a copy of the ABI Communication Assessment Kit? 🧠
This is the toolkit I use in my own practice, every day (20+ years and a PhD in brain injury) distilled into something you can run on a Monday.
It goes beyond standardised tests (which love to say “within normal limits” while conversations, friendships and jobs quietly fall apart) and gets to real-life communication: the person before the injury, the noisy real-world contexts, and the part we all find hardest: turning it into functional goals you can actually measure.
Because “progress made, job done” six months after a ABI should never be the end of anyone’s story.

New on the blog. It’s never too late!

I still see the “six-month window” written in discharge summaries. Meanwhile, two Australian research programs (UQ’s CHAT and Flinders’ Stroke Boot Camp) are showing real, measurable gains years after stroke.

Signs you might have outgrown muddling through your ABI caseload alone:

✅You’ve got the client, but no one to think out loud with.
✅ You reread the same assessment report three times wondering if you’re missing something.
✅ Your PD certificates say “brain injury” but your confidence doesn’t.
✅ You’re the only speechie in your workplace who sees adults.

None of this means you’re not good at your job. It means you’re working without the thing that makes hard caseloads sustainable: structured, honest, clinical conversation.

That’s why I’m opening ABI-focused group supervision next month: small groups, real cases, led by a PhD in brain injury who still carries a caseload. Details coming soon. If you want first dibs, comment “SUPERVISION” or send me a message.

I hope everyone has had a wonderful term so far. I can’t believe we’re already in Week 8 of this treatment block!

🌸🐣 EASTER BREAK🐣🌸

I just wanted to take a moment to say how incredibly proud I am of you. This treatment block has been full of hard work! I am so lucky to be part of your journey.

I’ll be taking some annual leave over the next two weeks, but I’m already looking forward to returning in mid-April and continuing our work together.

Big news for families this March 1! 🌟

Today marks an exciting step forward for speech pathology in Australia.

Medicare is significantly expanding coverage for speech pathology services — making it easier for children and young people to access the support they need.

Eligible Australians under 25 with conditions such as:
• Stuttering
• Speech sound disorders
• Cleft lip and/or palate

can now access up to 8 assessment sessions and 20 treatment sessions under Medicare.

This is in addition to existing Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plans, which currently cover 5 allied health sessions per year.

Rebates can be accessed with a referral from your GP or specialist.

Play a New Game: How Well Do Your Clients Know You? 🎨😃

Today, one of my wonderful clients surprised me with a caricature of… me!

They handed it to me the moment I walked into the session and I could not believe it. Fine the picture had shaved off a few years (and kgs) but his description of me meant I had the:

Same outfit.
Same shoes.
Same hair.
And yes… even my watch made the cut. ⌚️

How lucky am I to do what I do! How lucky am I to have made an impression that means someone wants to spend the time creating a caricature of me to make me smile!

What a joy for the day! Have a great weekend all!
