Hi friends!
In the summer of 2010 I stumbled into my first yoga class in a community hall in Byron. I started out as a very reluctant student. My friend Kristen dragged me along. She had decided that our little crew was much too unhealthy. She had a point, we'd tried to walk to the lighthouse the day before and had all given up half way.
We were in our early-mid twenties. We all worked in hospitality, Most of us were from England, the US or Europe. Our diet consisted of food âstolenâ from supermarket bins, lots of cheap beer and pies from the pie shop at 3am after dancing all night at high brow establishments like Woody's and Cheeky Monkeys.
Kristen was insistent. I was easily influenced. I said yes. Of course, it turned out to be a life defining moment, a story that I would go on to tell in front of hundreds of people year after year.
In this moment, as I sit on the studio floor after teaching a long weekend Sunday morning class full of eager students, I think about that 25 year old version of me who was always hungover and desperately craved something that could never be found in the places I was hell bent on looking.
I want to tell her, hey babes, look what we did!!! Look where we are! and honestly, it's all because of yoga.
If I hadn't stepped into that class I wouldn't have fallen in love with a practice that is so vast and wide it holds me through the most challenging of times.
I wouldn't be teaching yoga, I wouldn't own a yoga studio, I wouldn't run trainings and workshops, I wouldn't be constantly studying, reading about, practicing and talking about yoga.
I wouldn't have met all the incredible people who walk through the doors here every single day. Pretty much all of my friends I know because of yoga.
I wouldn't have met my husband who just happened to do the signs at the studio.
Maybe most importantly, I wouldn't know where to turn when I felt lonely, sad, hopeless and anxious.
Stepping into that first class, as reluctant as I was has changed everything. Of course I can never know where I'd be if I hadn't found yoga, but I don't think I'd be anywhere near as resilient, accepting and (generally) happy as I am now.
It's easy to turn âgoing to yogaâ into another thing on a never ending âshouldsâ list and I get it. I've been there.
The thing is yoga isn't just another THING. It's everything!
it affects everything you do because it works directly on your mind which is controlling how you view the world.
Maybe you've been dabbling for a while. This is your call to dive in.
